3 MESSAGE ASSALAMO ALAIKUM (Peace be With You) Year 2003 was a very significant for the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC). It is during this year that we were able to effect the transfer of the Seed Fund to the Council. With this, the National Seed Industry shall be able to ensure fund support to production of quality seeds and plant materials and development of new plant varieties. Quality seeds and planting materials are vital inputs to crop production. Farmers are always looking for better seeds in their commercial farming endeavor, and along this line the National Seed Industry Council continue to accredit and register agricultural crops. The system for crop variety accreditation in the National Seed Industry Council assures that only those plant varieties that had met or exceeded the standards are accredited and registered. Through the efforts of the members of the different Technical Working Groups of the National Seed Industry Council, twenty-four new varieties were accredited for this year. These are three stop gap rice varieties for tungro hot spot areas, six yellow and one white corn hybrids, one peanut, one cotton hybrid, four cassava for commercial processing purposes, two sweet potato, one greater yam (ubi), two pili, and three rambutan fruit crops. Through the initiative of the Council and the NSIC Secretariat, this information material was conceptualized to show case the 2003 accredited and registered varieties. The varieties are briefly described in terms of their morphological, agronomic and economic characteristics. It is envisioned that this material shall be a source of information for farmers, scientists, technical people of the Department of Agriculture, and other interested parties. The NSIC Secretariat had in its database the complete information regarding these new crop varieties. BLO UMPAR ADIONG Vice Chairman and Executive Director 28

4 CASSAVA NSIC Registration Number :NSIC 2005 Cv29 Variety Name :CG Popular Name :Rajah 1 Sponsoring agency/station UP Los Baños, College, Laguna Root yield (tons/ha) : 29.0 % Root dry matter : 36.4 Root HCN rating : 3.3 Leaf spot rating : 1.9 CBB rating : 1.1 Mites rating : 2.0 Scale insects rating : 1.9 Maturity : 10 The nominated variety can be grown in all regions of the Philippines. Its fresh root yield is not significantly different from Lakan 1, the check edible variety, and has slightly lower dry matter content in its roots which should make it more acceptable table variety (A major objection to Lakan 1 as a table variety its too hard roots because of their very high dry matter content). It is slightly more resistant to major cassava pests than the check variety. 27

10 Agro Climatic, Seasonal and Cultural Recommendation Irrigated lowland, dry and wet seasons, suitable for transplanting and direct seeding culture. High yielding with average yields of 5.19 tons/ha as transplanted crop in the dry season and 5.63 tons/ha in the wet season in the Multi-Location Adaptation Trial (MAT), out yielding the check PSB Rc28 by 4.1% and 9.6% in the dry season and wet season, respectively. Under direct seeding culture, it produces mean yield of 5.4 t/ha in the DS and 5.1 t/ha in the WS. Matures in 106 days in DS, 109 days in WS; with average plant height of 90 cm and average number of productive tillers per hill of 1 under transplanting culture. As direct seeded crop, it matures earlier especially during the wet season with only 100 days. Has intermediate resistance to blast, bacterial leaf blight (BLB), and sheath blight (SHB), but susceptible to tungro; moderately resistant to deadhearts and has intermediate resistance to whiteheads, and yellow stemborer (YSB), but moderately susceptible to brown planthopper (BPH) Has good grain and eating quality, having intermediate amylase content and low gelatinization temperature. PJ21 apparently retained the good grain and eating quality characteristics of its parents IR 64, Burdagol and Sasanishki. Source of planting materials PhilRice Seed stock Available 50 Kg.
