TIMURA THERMO WOOD MODIFYING WOOD THROUGH THERMAL TREATMENT. TIMURA SPECIALISES IN THE THERMAL MODIFICATION OF NATIVE GERMAN WOOD SPECIES AND IN THE FURTHER PROCESSING OF SUCH SPECIES TO CREATE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR PRODUCTS MADE OF THERMO WOOD. During the thermal treatment process, the wood is heated once to temperatures exceeding 160 C in a precisely defined process. Without using any chemicals, biocides or other additives, timura therefore manages to give native German wood species such as ash, poplar, pine or spruce the proven durability of tropical woods. Thermo wood s lower hygroscopicity reduces its wood equilibrium moisture content and thereby guarantees long-lasting protection against wood-destroying organisms such as rot fungi, bacteria, wood parasites and insects. At the same time, the swelling and shrinkage behaviour typical of wood is considerably reduced, while dimensional and shape stability are both increased. All thermally treated woods are characterised by a solid, dark brown wood colour over their entire cross-section. SUSTAINABILITY. timura Holzmanufaktur GmbH feels obligated to abide by the principle of sustainability and has enshrined this in its philosophy. As an FSC and PEFC-certified company, timura exclusively processes wood produced through responsible and sustainable forestry and takes a great deal of care to abide by the associated guidelines when procuring raw wood.

Significance of the FSC certificate: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organisation that aims to guarantee sustainable forestry. Certification involves maintaining as well as improving the economic, ecological and social aspects of forestry operations. The system should also help to avoid disputed wood sources through compliance with the FSC s Controlled Wood Standards and ensure fair purchasing guidelines. The certification relates to the purchasing of raw materials, the outsourcing of wood drying operations, the manufacture of thermally modified wood and the sale of said wood. Significance of the PEFC certificate: The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) is an international forest certification scheme. Its goal is to ensure and continuously improve sustainable forest management, all the while guaranteeing ecological, social and economic standards. The PEFC system has developed product chain certification for the wood s journey from the forest to the consumer. timura Holzmanufaktur GmbH is certified throughout its entire product chain, i.e. from the purchasing process, to production, to the sale of thermally modified woods.

TIMURA THERMO WOOD PATENTED VACU 3 - TECHNOLOGY. TIMURA HOLDS THE PATENT FOR THE APPLIED VACUUM PRESS DRYING METHOD USED FOR THERMAL TREATMENT. The special feature of this sophisticated thermal modification technology lies in its use of further developed vacuum chambers, large-scale heating plates for even heat transfer and high pressing force on the wood during its treatment in the vacuum atmosphere. BENEFITS OF THERMO WOOD IN GENERAL. Native wood used as a substitute for tropical wood Durability class 1 or 2 (depending on the wood species and treatment stage) Particularly resistant to wood-destroying organisms such as rot fungi, bacteria, wood parasites and insects Significantly reduced swelling and shrinkage behaviour Reduced wood equilibrium moisture content High dimensional stability Low maintenance costs when used in outdoor installations

PARTICULAR BENEFITS OF TIMURA S THERMO WOOD FOLLOWING THE VACU 3 PROCESS. Resource-saving, environmentally-friendly technology with a very favourable energy balance. Wood produced through responsible and sustainable forestry. Gentle and tension-free wood drying operations. Torsion-free, with only minimal planing losses compared with equalising thermo wood. Odour-neutral and low-emission thermo wood, so particularly suitable for indoor use too (certified by the German Committee for Health-Related Evaluation of Building Products AgBB). Very uniform and homogeneous thermal treatment of material thicknesses from 0.5 mm (veneer) up to plank thicknesses of 65 mm. Thermal treatment intensity varies according to different products and wood species, with subtle gradations for ideal material properties. Individual, customer-oriented definition of treatment stages and colour nuances. Attractive and elegant wood colours. Application-oriented factory conditioning the wood s moisture content can be individually adjusted to future climatic conditions. Small batches or large order volumes reproducible results at all times. Comprehensive quality management for a high-quality product standard.

TIMURA THERMO WOOD PRODUCTS, APPLICATIONS AND AREAS OF USE. PRODUCT RANGE: ALL WOOD SPECIES NATIVE TO CENTRAL EUROPE AS THERMALLY TREATED WOOD. Planks, boards, unedged timber, sawn timber Trimmed or untrimmed, up to 65 mm thick Veneer, thick veneer, decks (slats) from 0.5 mm thick Rough sawn, planed, sanded, textured or brushed surfaces Planed goods with longitudinal and transverse profiling as required Surface coating: untreated, or oiled, varnished or painted on one side, several sides or all sides OUTDOOR PRODUCTS: Terrace and balcony surfaces (covered areas and sub-structure) Handrails, steps Façade (visible areas and sub-structure) Screens (posts and fillings) Pool surrounds, over-water walkways Boat decks Garden furniture, plant containers Windows, doors

INDOOR PRODUCTS: Solid wood and multi-layer parquet flooring with tongue and groove connectors for all-over adhesion, particularly in rooms with particular climatic conditions such as kitchens, bathrooms, swimming pools and saunas; also suitable for laying on underfloor heating systems. Furniture development and interior design, wall and ceiling panelling Kitchen worktops and decorative veneer elements SWELLING AND SHRINKAGE BEHAVIOUR, WOOD EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE CONTENT, SHAPE STABILITY Thermo wood s swelling and shrinkage behaviour is reduced by 30 to 50%. The wood equilibrium moisture content is therefore also 30 to 50% lower than that of untreated wood. As a rule of thumb, it can be accepted that the wood equilibrium moisture content of thermo wood is half that of untreated wood in the same climatic conditions. Without conditioning in other words, if the wood humidity is adapted to particular climatic conditions thermo wood has a wood humidity of less than 4% when delivered. So, in the tangential direction, the usual swelling and shrinkage is less than 5% in the case of outdoor applications. It may be necessary to adapt the thermo wood s humidity to future environmental conditions for particular requirements. Thermo wood has a particularly high level of shape stability. The warping and twisting commonly seen in untreated wood is largely eliminated. Transverse distortion the so-called transverse ratio of distribution is also significantly reduced.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF AND MEASURES USED IN PROCESSING. Thermo wood can generally be processed with all common woodworking machines. Thermo wood poses no additional risks not already present in untreated wood during processing. The usual personal protective measures applied in carpentry and joinery are therefore sufficient when processing thermo wood. The generally applicable rules for structural wood protection must be observed for thermo wood too during structural planning and assembly outdoors. Thermo wood should not be installed such that it is in direct contact with the ground. Before assembly, thermo wood should be conditioned to the future wood equilibrium moisture content. This is done at the factory prior to delivery following a consultation, or by means of suitable storage on site. Thermo wood s significantly reduced swelling and shrinkage behaviour must be taken into account during planning, processing and assembly operations; this is particularly important when combining thermo wood with untreated wood using adhesives, screws or similar products. There are suitable adhesives that are ideal in specific applications for the bonding (gluing) of thermo wood. Adhesives that are wellsuited to use on untreated wood in certain applications are not necessarily suitable for thermo wood too. Process parameters

during bonding must be adapted as appropriate. Consult your specialist partner and perform some bonding tests. The wood cells are modified as a result of the thermal treatment, making the wood brittle so it is essential to pre-drill screw holes during the screw connection process. The suitability of nails and staples as fasteners must be tested on a case-by-case basis. Thermal treatment goes hand in hand with reduced strength properties. Thermo wood is not approved for use in structurally load-bearing components. As is the case with untreated wood, thermo wood can be surface-treated using conventional methods: it can be oiled, varnished or painted. All the common application methods are taken into consideration depending on the coating material used. Thermo wood may react and become discoloured when it comes into contact with non-precious metals. This must be taken into consideration when selecting fasteners and carrying out metalwork in the vicinity of thermo wood. Thermo wood should be stored in a covered location with suitable ground clearance. Stacking thermo wood in slats helps to adjust its humidity to the environmental conditions. Exposure to sunlight may cause the outer surfaces of stacked wood to change colour; UV-opaque materials (black film or similar products) must be used if necessary.

TIMURA THERMO WOOD SPECIAL FEATURES WHEN USED OUTDOORS. When using softwoods for flooring purposes, the left sides of the boards must be used as the running surface to prevent exfoliation. Thermo wood s characteristic dark colour when delivered is not UV-stable. The wood s colour changes very quickly when exposed to sunlight. The dark colour of the surface becomes increasingly faded and changes to a silvery grey over the course of time. This natural process has no impact whatsoever on strength or usability. Depending on the wood species, its heartwood and sapwood contents and the forest area where it was grown, there may be colour variations within a batch that are completely natural for wood as a material and do not influence the wood s quality, properties or durability. The formation of small cracks on the surfaces of boards used in outdoor products is part of the normal appearance of wood when used outdoors as a result of its long-lasting swelling and shrinkage behaviour. To prevent decay, it should be ensured that components exposed to the elements can always be dried quickly by means of sufficient air circulation.

TIMURA THERMO WOOD SURFACE TREATMENT OF PRODUCTS. OUTDOOR PRODUCTS. Due to its thermal treatment, timura s thermo wood is innately highly resistant to wood-destroying fungi and insects, which makes it very durable when used outdoors even without the need to use additional coating agents (such as wood oils, varnishes, etc.). However, positive effects can be achieved in principle by using coating agents and care products: Deceleration of the natural greying process Possibility of colour design and colour retention Reduced soiling due to delayed biofilm formation Reduced surface moisture absorption and therefore reduced formation of micro cracks ( hairline cracks ) Coloured wood oils and varnishes are often applied, as thermo wood s brown shade changes to a silvery grey within a very short space of time unless suitable coating agents are used. Non-filmforming, porous wood oils and varnishes with colour pigments and inherent UV protection have proven themselves to be the best products to counteract the colour-change process. timura s thermo wood products can be ordered as versions pre-oiled at the factory, or they can be subsequently surface-treated at any time after installation. Brown-pigmented wood oils are designed to retain the wood s original colour when delivered for as long as possible, while to some extent grey-coloured oils pre-empt the wood s future natural greying process. The effects of weathering that appear over the course of time generally require a regular renovation coat.

INDOOR PRODUCTS. Generally speaking, timura indoor products and parquet floorboards in particular are delivered with pre-treated surfaces so they are ready for use in the home. In other words, they have been refined at the factory with double-oiled surfaces. Only initial care is then required once the flooring has been laid. timura also offers individual colour samples in addition to a comprehensive range of standard colours. SPECIAL SERVICES FROM TIMURA. In addition to its standard product range, timura sees itself as being a full-range supplier for terraces, façades, screens and parquet flooring. As well as expert advice, customers receive perfectly coordinated products that are relevant to their project, including any necessary components and suitable care products. timura Holzmanufaktur GmbH is always on hand as the perfect partner for developing and implementing special solutions and applications.
