2 1 Simon is visiting a lumberyard. A lumberyard sells lumber. Lumber is wood that is used in construction. People use lumber to build houses.

3 2 Simon talks to a worker at the lumberyard. Simon wants learn about lumber. The worker walks Simon around the lumberyard. The worker helps Simon learn about lumber.

4 3 Lumber is made in a lumber mill. Trucks deliver large logs to the lumber mill. The large logs are cut into smaller boards. These smaller boards are called lumber. That is what you see in the lumberyard.

5 4 Simon asks, Where did the trucks get the large logs? The large logs came from a forest. Machines are used to cut down trees. The trees are cut into large logs. The trucks carry the logs to the lumber mill.

6 5 Simon asks, Why does lumber have different names? Lumber can be made from different types of trees. The name of the lumber helps you determine the type of tree it was made from.

7 6 Simon sees lumber named pine. Pine is made from pine trees. Pine lumber is good for cutting and carving. Pine lumber is often used to build parts of a house that are indoors. It is also used to make telephone poles.

8 7 Simon sees lumber named cedar. Cedar is made from cedar trees. Cedar lumber is good for wet, outdoor environments. Cedar lumber is often used to build parts of a house that are outdoors. It is also used to make wooden pencils.

9 8 Simon sees lumber named oak. Oak is made from oak trees. Oak lumber is a very strong wood. That is why it is the most used wood for making furniture. It is also used to make barrels that hold liquids.

10 9 Simon sees lumber named maple. Maple is made from maple trees. Maple lumber can be a very hard wood. Hard maple wood can survive a hard hit. That is why it is used to make bowling pins and baseball bats. It is also used to make musical instruments.

11 10 Simon says, I have a guitar that is made from maple wood. Oh, no! I need to leave. I m late for my guitar lesson. Thank you for talking to me about lumber. I learned a lot!
