Forest Science Master Degree in Padova University

What is Forest Science an international 2-years Master degree completely taught in English characterised by a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to forest resources management, fully grounded on forest ecology principles aiming at developing knowledge for multifunctional, sustainable and responsible management, conservation and valorisation of forest ecosystems and of natural and semi-natural habitats in an European Alpine-Mediterranean environment

Why Forest Science Changing societal demands growing and more urbanized population from timber-centred to people-centred forest management increasingly recognized importance of ecosystem services, e.g. biodiversity, health, carbon sequestration, recreation

Why Forest Science Changing global and local scenarios globalization changing role/power of the States vs. TNCs decentralization, privatization, private investments social innovation, networks climate change overexploitation, unsustainability, illegality a c b Hirschberger, 2008

Why Forest Science Changing forest landscapes. call for multiple functions of forests: conservation of forest ecosystems mostly for public goods long-term, integrated sustainable forest management resilience and adaptation of forest ecosystems after disturbances

Forest Science s Guest Professors Anna Lawrence Honorary Professor of Human Dimensions of Forestry, Scottish School of Forestry, University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland, UK Course: Social Forestry The course will stimulate thought and analysis about the people in forestry, and the methods available to understand their roles. After taking the course, the student will be able to: identify stakeholders and suitable modes of participation for different stakeholders analyse examples of community and urban forestry; appreciate the value of different types of knowledge in forest management understand ways to accommodate these social dimensions into forest policy and management Mark Adams, University of Sydney Forest Ecology and management in mediterranean climates Paul Vantomme, FAO and KU Leuven Policy and market development for Non wood forest products

Elective courses Climate change and forestry: monitoring and policies (6 ECTS) - Laura Secco, Unipd (elearning) The student will: understand climate change risks; familiarize with basic concepts of mitigation and adaptation; familiarize with role of forests in addressing climate change issues; understand the Post Kyoto Protocol; understand REDD+ mechanisms and governance; get and overview of voluntary and regional initiatives for the reduction and compensation of GHGs; understand best practices and limitation in forest carbon projects; understand the role of private investors and investments and the growing role of forest plantations Ecosystem Services Entrepreneurship: from ideas to business (6 CFU) This course is a result of an Erasmus+ funded Knowledge Alliance project (ECOSTAR), a high level and innovative project developed by 9 businesses and research partners including the University of Padova and ETIFOR (a spin-off of Padova University) as well as other organisations from UK, United States, Spain and Romania. The course aims to guide students to acquire key concepts and high-level entrepreneurial skills by working with ECOSTAR's business partners, to convert innovative ideas into successful business plans and activities, in the field of production and marketing of ecosystem services and biodiversity.
