Introduction Western Red Cedar Export Association Non profit trade association, established in 2001 WRCEA members consist of 12 primary members and more than 50 in-market associate members in 12 countries. Responsible for approximately 70% of all WRC shipments outside North America. Purpose: Increase market awareness for WRC through education, technical expertise and promotion. Technical and promotional resource for architects, builders, manufacturers.

Introduction Real Cedar Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata) Trees reach heights of meters with diameters of 2.4 meters (approximately 450m3) Largest Cedar tree in Canada, located in Pacific Rim Park is 55.5 meters tall with a circumference of 18.3 meters Tree of Life is what the first nations of the Pacific Northwest called the stately Western Red Cedar. Its legendary durability made Cedar nature s gift for building ocean-going canoes, post-and-beam houses, ceremonial dance masks and ancestral totem poles, many of which have withstood centuries of weathering. Today its natural beauty brings warmth, character and longevity to homes & offices, and its supreme versatility as a building material has made it the enduring choice of discerning architects and builders around the world.

Growing Region

Growing Region Two Growth Areas: West Coast of Canada. Some in southern Alaska and US Pacific Northwest BC Interior Wet Belt. Some in Idaho; Montana & Washington

Standing Volume Total standing timber volume is estimated at 750 million m3 (80% of this volume is in the coastal region). WRC represents 20% of inventory on the coast and 2% in the interior. In terms of total harvest, the proportion of cedar has remained constant over the last 30 years

Renewable Resource Forests of BC cover 60 million hectares. Less than 1/3 of 1% are harvested annually. More than 200 million seedlings are planted each year (three for every tree harvested). 50 million m3 of Western Red Cedar is growing in Provincial parks or other protected regions.

Harvesting Practices Annual harvest volumes 6.4 million m3 (4.8 million m3 is from the Coast) in log form. This volume results in approx. 2.2 million m3 of sawn timber (shakes & shingles not incl.) Drastic Changes in Methods: Variable retention harvesting and helicopter logging are widely practiced and keeps the forest structure intact.

Global Forest Certification

Certification in Canada & BC

Certification in BC FSC limited availability, due to lack of regional standard. Currently limited commercial availability. PEFC includes the three most commonly used North American certification systems: CSA, SFI and ATFS (American Tree Farm System US only). In BC, CSA and SFI are most common.
