Green Forest and Management plan a tool for both wood production and nature conservation Bio-georaphical Regions in Europe, PhD Chief Ecologist and Environmental Manager at Södra Forest Owners Association, Sweden Sharing Experience on Forest Biodiversity European Paper Week, 26 november 2008, Brussels / / 2 Sweden is a forest country Swedish forests and forestry More than 50% of the area is forest 23 million hectar of productive forest land 4 million hectars of less productive land Long history of forest use Very small areas of natural forests remains 95% managed forests 3 % protected in reserves etc < 1 % biodiversity Key-habitats / / 4 Forest owners Södra forest owners with 2.3 miljon hectar Ca 20 %: state owned Ca: 25 %: forest companies 31 forestry districts within 3 regions The typical forestry district Ca: 50 %: small private forest owners 1700 members Average size of holdings: 50 hectars Ca: 5%: others ha of productive forest land Acuired volume: 300, ,000 m3 5-7 staff / / 6 1

Natural disturbance Storm Valuable keyhabitats water cources / / 14 Internal dynamic creates dead an decaying wood Green forest and managment plan Österängen Stenberga Norrängen / / 16 How is the green plan drawn up? It is made exclusively for each individual property. It gives a detailed description of the forest relating to wood supply, composition of types of tree, and age. For each compartment a management target is proposed The targets are split into four classes: PG Production with general environmental consideration K Combined targets (both production and environmental consideration) NS Nature conservation requiring treatment NO Nature conservation untouched. How is the green plan drawn up? Compartments classed as K, NS or NO are described in detail in the plan with regards to forest description, targets to be achieved and what actions that are required / / 18 3

PG Production with General consideration These are compartments where wood production is the primary target. Here you will find lower nature values for which you should take general consideration in felling operations. The nature consideration usually covers 3-5 per cent of the area. In some cases, it can amount to up to 10 per cent of the area / / 20 Clearcut in the 1960s no considerations at all Final cut area of today different types of considerations / / 22 Green Drivers Licence K Combined targets Wood production is still an important objective but higher nature values (>10 per cent of the area) require that a specific objective is achieved with regards to nature conservation. The size of the area which should be allocated for forest production and nature conservation, respectively, is determined on a case by case basis and is stated in percentage terms (for example, 70% will be for production and 30% for nature conservation). Examples of K- compartments can be mixed forest with a large content of birch and aspen / / 24 4

NS Nature conservation requiring care These are compartments set aside exclusively for nature conservation and in which the nature values require some kind of treatment in order to be preserved and/or developed. Examples of NS compartments are overgrown pasture land on which spruce has started to compete with old oak trees. NO Nature conservation untouched These are compartments set aside exclusively for nature conservation and in which the nature values you want to protect will benefit most if the forest is left untouched. Examples of NO compartments are swamp forests with natural water dynamics / / 26 An ower-wiew forest map with the classified compartments Green forest and managment plan overwiew Production with general consideration (PG) Combined targets (K) / / 28 What does it bring positive to biodiversity Happy and angry forest owners You could plan your activities for better conservation in a long-term wiew. In the tailor-made plan for each property you find information on where to focus on conservation and there are also written recommendations for your management. This is a direct operating tool for the forest owners themselves, no need of middle-men. The management of the wood sources is carried out by the forest owners themselves supported by professional forest officers within the Swedish family forestry / / 30 5

Main wood procurement chains 1. Short Procurement Chain: Company owned or leased forest Main wood procurement chains 2. Medium procurement chain: Purchase from Forest Owner The shortest chain where the pulpmill procures wood from a forest it owns or leases. A Green Forest and Management plan could be an excellent tool in order to manage the forest for both wood production and biodiversity conservation. It could be of vital value to show this total picture for critical customers In these circumstances, the pulpmill has an important influence on the impacts of its wood procurement on biodiversity. The pulpmill buys the wood from a forest owner or a forest owner society. The pulpmill could put pressure at the producer of the rawmaterial and only accept deliveries from a forest owner that can show how good consideration to biodiversity values is taken. A Green Forest and Management plan is an example of a good tool for that / /32 Main wood procurement chains 3. Long procurement chain: Purchase from second or third party Thank you very much for your attention! The pulpmill buys wood that has already been felled from a wood merchant. In this case, the pulpmill has no influence on the felling activities but could still use the ideas from chain of custody control and put pressure on every link in the chain from forest to factory. This is also in harmony with the global forest certification systems PEFC and FSC, where a demand of a scheme for both wood production and biodiversity conservation is standard. The pulpmill could claim that the supplier deliver wood only from areas with Green Forest and Management plans or a similar planning that has taken both production and biodiversity values into account / / 34 And thank you from the White-tailed Sea eagle! My nesting site is marked in the Green Forest and Management plan / 35 6
