Forestry Research in India; Status, Issues and Opportunities By Dr Ashwani Kumar Sharma Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Research & Training) UP

Ministry of Environment and Forests The Ministry of Environment and Forests is classified as a Scientific Ministry under the Government of India. Since its inception in 1985, the Ministry has been funding research through grantin-aid projects to many research institutions in different areas under the broad ambit of environment protection and management

Research Policy Committee of ICFRE (2012) has suggested Following Thrust areas for Forestry Research: Managing Forests and Forest products for livelihood support and economic growth. Biodiversity conservation and Ecological security. Forest and Climate Change Forest genetic resource management and Tree Improvement Forestry education and Policy Research to meet emerging challenges Forestry Extension for taking Research to people

Vision Statement of Research wing of UPFD Ashwani PCCF UP Achievement of ecological security as well as environmental stability and livelihood support through forestry sector Mission Statement To bring evergreen revolution by enhancing the quality as well as quantity of forest and tree cover on sustained basis, through the application of science and technology.

Important Thrust Areas 1. Productivity enhancement of forests through genetic interventions and Biotechnology 2. Improve technology and its transfer to the stake holders 3. Complete package of practices for various agro-forestry systems in the country 4. Biodiversity conservation and management 5. Value addition of the forestry products Ashwani PCCF UP

Important Thrust Areas Contd.. 6. Complete package of practices for medicinal plants cultivation, processing and marketing. 7. In situ as well as ex situ conservation of threatened and endangered flora and fauna 8. Enhancement of the survival and quality of plantations. 9. Capacity building, particularly of the Front line forestry Staff through skill as well as knowledge upgradation 10. Strengthening of the Research Organisation Ashwani PCCF UP

There are limitations in increasing the geographical area under forests The only alternative is to increase the productivity per unit area per unit time Genetic improvements can be substantially obtained in artificially regenerated forests Genetic improvement basically involves increasing the frequency of desired genes or gene complexes

Genetic improvement can result in: Increased productivity in terms of growth and yield i.e. quantitive increase Improvement in quality like straight stem, disease resistance, greater adaptability etc.
