1 lilt Forest nsect & Disese Mnement eport No July 19 A DMNSTATN F BASAL AA CUTTNG T MANAG MUNTAN PN BTL N SCND-GWTH PNDSA PN PGSS PT N. 1 By Dyle D. Bennett nd Mrk D. McGreor NTDUCTN BJCTVS The mountin pine beetle, Dendroctonus onderose Hopk., is the mjor brk beetle pest of second-rowth ponderos pine, Pinus ponderose Lws, in the northwestern United Sttes. vidence indictes tht low tree vior cused by intensive between-tree competition underlies the occurrence of beetle outbreks. Sufficient dt show tht thinnin secondrowth ponderos pine stnds will increse tree rowth nd reduce mortlity cused by the beetle. However, limitin thinnin to only one level of bsl re cuttin is not sound, vible lterntive to prevent or reduce mountin pine beetle infesttion in ll secondrowth ponderos pine stnds in Montn. Therefore, demonstrtion of vrious bsl re cuttins to prevent infesttion in reen stnds nd reduce ctive infesttion in secondrowth ponderos pine stnds by chnin stnd dynmics hs been estblished in Montn. This demonstrtion is coopertive effort between the Lewis nd Clrk Ntionl Forest, Bureu of Lnd Mnement, Forest nsect nd Disese Mnement, -1, nd eserch Work Unit 221, ntermountin Forest nd ne xperiment 411/ Sttion. This demonstrtion hs the followin objectives: A. Apply recommended cuttin strteies prior to or within 1-2 yers fter stnds hve become infested, i.e., prevent n outbrek from developin or reduce n infesttion tht hs developed to epidemic level by chnin stnd dynmics. B. Mne throuh reenertion nd post cut techniques to obtin mximum wood fiber production. C. ncrese knowlee on beetle/host tree interction nd consequences in these mned stnd situtions. D. Mne forest cover to ttin full potentil for timber production consistent with mnement of key vlues such s soil nd wter. This objective implies desirble stockin levels of disese-free rowin stock of desired species. 2 MTHDS SULTS Two res hve been selected for this demonstrtion. The first, dministered by the Judith ner District, covers pproximtely 66 cres south of Tollte Mountin. The second re covers bout 45 cres nd is locted on BLM lnd ner the South Fork of Fltwillow Creek (fiure 1). n ech re twelve 15- to 2-cre blocks were estblished. The followin precut dt ws collected from ech block to determine cuttin strteies nd volume to be removed from reen nd infested stnds: Dimeter-Phloem distribution/dimeter clss Bsl re stems/cre Site index Hbitt type levtion nfested trees/cre Strip ttcks/cre Pitchouts/cre Dwrf mistletoe rtin clss Aspect Slope Soil type All blocks hve been estblished nd cruised. The precut dt ppers in tbles 1 nd 2. Cuttin strteies for ech block hve been determined, nd cuttin bids will be dvertised this sprin. However, current mrket conditions my preclude the purchse of these sles. Loed units will be recruised followin beetle fliht, 19, nd the infesttion intensity dt compred with precut informtion. Any units not cut will be recruised to updte precut informtion. Followin loin, comprisons will be mde to show the reltionship between the vrious cuttin prescriptions, stnd prmeters, nd the number of ttcked trees/cre.
