Course Objective: The student will identify world trade patterns in forest products, the role of private and government organizations in forestry, and the potential contribution of forest resources to economic development. Industrial forestry and community forestry will be compared as models for long-term sustained economic growth. In this course the student will develop skills in large scale forestry project planning. The interrelationships between society and the forest resource base will be described. Lectures: Text: Weekly Power Point presentations with a voice overlay Handouts; Optional text*: Grebner, D.L., Bettinger, P., and J. Siry Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources. Academic Press, New York, United States. 496 pp. *Although this book is an overview text, it was broadly written within an international context. Some chapters will match up well with the stated lecture topic, others will be of marginal interest. It will add to the exposure aspect of the course. Prerequisites: None Grading: For FO 8443, the grades will be based on a midterm exam (Week 7), final exam (Exam week), term paper (Week 15), presentation, topic essays (due various weeks), and class participation. Final grades will be distributed as follows: Topic Essays 20% Midterm exam 15% Final exam 15%

2 Term Paper 20% Classroom Presentation 20% Participation 10% Topic Essays Short essays of 3 to 5 pages will be written by every student after each topic theme. Students will have to explore some aspect of the topic theme and review additional sources of information not incorporated into the lectures. In addition, bullet list will be developed and discussed with fellow students in short discussion sessions in class. Essay format will be double spaced and the citation format will follow standards found in Forest Science. This website has some useful information: Term Paper Requirements Date Due Topic title 9/15/17 Abstract with 15 citations 10/13/17 Final Paper 11/27/17 The final term paper must have between 15 and 20 pages of text. This does not include tables or other graphical devices to enhance your discussion. I accept a wide range of topics as long as it has an international aspect. In addition, to the formatting requirements listed above for the topic essay assignments, a title page, and table of contents is required. Participation Requirement: Given the online nature of this course, active participation on the course s discussion board is critical to a successful experience in this class. During each theme topic, a discussion board prompt will be provided and students will be required to generate a relevant issue related what is being discussed and provide two responses to other student comments and questions. Responses will be evaluated on their level of seriousness to addressing the question at hand.
