3 Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change National REDD+ Secretariat Consultation and participation in REDD+ Readiness process 1. Background The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has developed a Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy. The CRGE vision aims to build a climate resilient green economy and to make the country carbon neutral by The Strategy identifies eight key sectors that play key roles in sustainable development including REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), soils, livestock, energy, buildings and cities, industry, transport and health. To achieve the GoE s CRGE related goals on land use change and forestry, the GoE is implementing a National REDD+ Readiness phase with support from various partners, including the World Bank s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). The Country officially launched the REDD+ Readiness Process in January 15, Among other activities Consultations and awareness creation to stakeholders are core elements of the readiness phase. Accordingly, the National REDD+ Secretariat has been held a series of awareness creation program, conferences, Steering Committee Meetings, REDD+ Technical Working Group Meetings and other consultations with key stakeholders. 2. Awareness creation program Awareness creation on the concept of REDD+ Readiness process in the country across a multitude of regional and zonal level REDD+ stakeholders and establishing regional level REDD+ management unit is part of the plan in the national REDD+ readiness implementation. The program is meant to raise awareness on REDD+ basics and related issues. This helps to provide support and decentralized structure for efficient coordination and successful implementation of REDD+ activities in the future. since Feb when the Country Progress Report was submitted. 4 Since February 2015 the National REDD+ Secretariat, has conducted Regional and zonal level awareness creation programs on six Regional (i.e Awareness creation workshop at Benshanguel Gumuze Regional State, Gambella Regional State, Ethiopian Somail Regional State and Afar Regional State, SNNPR and Amhara Regional) 2.1. Consultation As a sub-component of the readiness phase the REDD+ Secretariat conducted consultation with all stakeholders including forest dependent people and local communities at national, regional and local levels through various ways. National and Regional conferences are a means to bring diverse stakeholders in the nation and regions to create awareness, share experience, educate and capacitate them. To realize these four regional and one national level conferences were conducted during the last one year on the theme of 'Early Lessons from ongoing REDD+ Project initiatives'. The objective of these conferences is to share lessons from early REDD+ initiatives and best practice on sustainable forest management to all stakeholders from national to local level communities. Since February 2015 the National REDD+ Secretariat, has conducted three Regional conference in (SNNPR, Amhara and Tigray) Regional State three two Kike of workshops, three validation workshops, Steering Committee Meetings and Technical Working Group Meeting. 30

32 3.1 SNNP Regional State Regional Conference Title: Regional Conference Date : March 03-05/2015 Venue / Place: SNNP Regional State, Hawassa-South Star International Hotel Objective: The objective of this conference is to share lessons from early REDD+ initiatives and best practice on sustainable forest management to all stakeholders from national to local level communities.
