2 Joint Forest Management Committee Sakurde Tal-Purandar Dist.-Pune. Village Sakurde is situated in the drought prone Tahsil Purandar of Pune district. It is about 45 kms from Pune on Baramati Road. The village is in Saswad range of Bhor forest sub-division. The Bhor forest sub division constitutes of south western part of Pune district and included Bhor, Purandar & part of Velha Tahsil.Total forest area of the sub division is ha., which is about 15.50% of the geographical area. Forests are spread over 310 villages in the sub division out of 391 villages. Forest protection committees are formed in 286 villages. The MOU s are signed with all these committees and the process of preparation of microplans and registration is in progress. Afforestation on 3838ha. Forest area & other activities are carried out in 112 villages through Joint Forest Management. A separate account for for village development Fund is opened with nationalized bank for 98 VFC s and an amount of Rs.7,73,543/- is collected and deposited in these account. The members primarily receive fodder as forest produce for their consumption from the forest areas. The concept of Joint Forest Management is implemented in Maharashtra as per the G.R. No. SLF -1091/F.No.119/F-11 Dated 16/3/1992. To strengthen the Joint Forest Management Sant Tukaram Vangram Yojna is implemented in Maharashtra as per the G.R. dated 26/11/2006 from the year The JFM committee of village Sakurde ranked first prize in Pune district for year , & and Second prize in Pune district for year and second prize in Maharashtra state for the year , in Sant Tukaram Vangram Yojna award.

3 Sakurde is about 45 kms from Pune & 9 kms from Saswad. The height from MSL is Total geographical area of the village is Ha. & the forest area is Ha. There are about 400 families in the village & most of the population depends on Agriculture for their livelihood. 4 1. Afforestation The afforestation programme is implemented in the forest of village Sakurde with active participation of JFM committee.the yearwise statement of areas afforested is as follows. 5 The effective implementation of soil & moisture conservation works have resulted in substantial increase in ground water table. This has increased the avalibility of water for agriculture through wells & borewells. 3.Forest Protection The 400 members of JFM committee actively participate in forest protection. The forests are protected from illicit cutting, grazing, encroachment and fire. There is no offence of illict cutting, grazing, encroachment or fire registered in Sakurde forests. The members have constructed a fencing of about 400m along the forest boundary by way of Shramdan. 4. Prevention of Fire The members have played a very active role in protecting the forests from fire. Every year a fire line of about 5000m is burnt by the members to prevent forest fire. Through the active participation of the villagers. The forests are effectively protected from fires & there is no offence of five booked in the last five years. 5. Prevention of encroachments in the forests The boundary of the forests is demarcated by cement pillars and the forests are effectively protected from encroachment. 6. Prevention of illicit grazing The gramsabha of village Sakurde has passed a resolution of charai Bandi and kurhad bandi, which is strictly implemented. The fodder available in the forest is cut and stall fed to the cattles. Grazing of cattles in the forests is totally banned & no offence of gazing is registered.

6 7. Protection to wild life A variety of wild life such as Panthers, hyena, barking deer, chinkara, wolfs, wild boar, hares, porcupines, jackals, peacocks etc. are found in the forests of Sakurde. These animals are well protected and cases of hunting are not recorded in this village. Hoardings of information & pictures of wild life are erected in the village. 8. Provision of waterholes for wild life There are 2 waterholes specially constructed to provide water for the wild life in summer. 40 trays are provided or large trees to keep grains for the birds. 9. Shramadan The villagers have constructed a earthen dam of 1.25lakh liter capacity through shramdan, which provides water upto the month of april. A approach road of 500 m & one vanrai bandhara is also constructed through shramdan. 10. Peoples Participation The students, villagers & the women actively participate in various forestry activies like celebration of world forestry day, environment day, earth day etc. Tree planting programme are also done through active participation of the villagers. 11. Women s participation The no of womens in the village is 1005 i.e 44.67% of total population. They actively participate in afforestation, forest protection & other activities. There are 16 self help groups established by the women in village Sakurde. Various activities as raring of goats,cows and preparation of papad,shevaya,masala etc. are done by these groups.

7 12. Use of non forest fuel About 80% of the families use non-wood fuel for their daily use. 280 house holds have L.P.G. connections, 11 houses use Gobar gas & 20 use Nirdhur Chul 13. Utilizations of the grants 100% of the funds made available to the committee is utilized properly. 14. Records All the necessary records such as cash book, measurement books, proceeding books, receipt book, saving account book, plantation registers are kept & updated by the committee. Timely audit of the records is done by the chartered accountants on the panel. 15. Innovative ideas A project of Vermi culture is initiated by the villagers. A project of preparation of custard apple pulp is proposed in the near future. 16. Awareness Awareness regarding Forsts,wild life & environment is created in the villagers & students by celebrating various forestry & programmes. 17. Awareness through students Students play a very important role in creating awareness of forests & environment. They actively participate in tree planting, nursery, shramdan etc. activities. The direct benefit received by the villagers through effective implementation of joint forest management.

8 1. Earlier drinking water was provided to the village by tanker from February to May. Now no tanker is required. 2. Increase of 125ha. area under horticulture crop. 3. Increase in milk collection from 800ltr. to 4000ltr. 4. Increase in availability of fodder for the cattle. 5. Improvement in the livelihood of the villagers.
