5 Preface Assalammualaikum w.b.t Bismillahirrahman nirrahim. Malaysia waters cover an area of 453,186km 2. Out of this, approximately 1.4% is designated as marine protected areas (MPAs) by various pieces of legislation either by federal or state jurisdiction. The total area of this MPA is still lower than the target set in The Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 where by 2020, as much as 10% of the country s protected area is protected and managed as a marine protected area. By establishing marine parks or other form of marine protected area, we hope that the ecosystem of marine life will be protected and properly managed. It will help in rejuvenation of over exploited zones and as protection of threatened and endangered marine species, also enhancing educational and research activities in marine sciences. Marine parks also provide conducive and safe recreational activities for the visitors. The (DMPM) takes a serious action to identify the potential islands where its surrounding waters holds a variety of marine life species with a healthy marine ecosystem that need protection and gazetted as Marine Park or other form of MPA. These initial initiatives involve surveys for the marine resource inventory of the potential area In this regard, a biodiversity and socio-economic study was conducted by DMPM in collaboration with researchers from the University of Malaya and University Malaysia Terengganu. It aims to identify potential areas of waters in the Mersing District of Johor to be gazetted as protected areas or Marine Parks. The areas that have been identified include 7 islands namely Pulau Lima Kechil dan Lima Besar, Pulau Tokong Rakit, Tokong Gantang, Tokong Chondong, Tokong Belalai, Tokong Chupak dan Pulau Tokong Yu. The surveys were conducted using the allocation from the Development Expenditure of RMK-11. I hereby take the opportunity to express my appreciation to the team of researchers who have successfully produced a comprehensive report. This report is a result of detailed surveys and hard work by many people to provide the first valuable and documented information on the marine resources of the 7 islands. It is hoped that the information from this report will help DMPM or the State Government of Johor in its efforts to protect the marine biodiversity in the area. Thank you. DATO DR.
