Sustainable Forest Management & Multiple Natural Resource Values Examples: Local initiatives on non-timber values associated with public forest landscapes + future PAC Meetings (education themes) DMI Public Advisory Committee Date: March 15 th, 2017

SFM marked a fundamental shift from plantation-focus, timber centric forest management policies.to more balance Social Ecological Economic

that effort to seek more balance is visibly diverse in Canadian forests policy (Est. 1995, 2003) ALL forest management policies & plans in Canada seek to address all 6 of these attributes of multiple-value sustainability

that aspiration is also entrenched in Alberta government evolving policy across 2 sister Ministries (lands, water, forests, biodiversity)

One of the hallmarks of SFM is in assuring Multiple values are considered on forested landscapes in government policy, monitoring, and stewardship practices of users (public, industry) Right of continued public & Indigenous access to use & enjoy those resources East Peace F1

As FMA-tenure holders, forest products companies DO NOT: Own the public lands they hold under tenure Hold authority/jurisdiction to directly control or manage non-timber resources

Nevertheless, within a specific scope of Alberta s defined expectations, tenure holders DO: Cooperate with the Province in its aspirations by meeting standards & operating requirements Assist by managing stewardship considerations for persistence of non-timber resources

DMI has also voluntarily engaged in broader collaboration (incl. co-funding). A few examples: Sulphur Lake ( ): Campsite operation costs, Trout fisheries enhancement & aeration, Interpretive trail development (c.$467,000, 27-years)

Grizzly Bear ( ): Grizzly ecology research initiatives (fri, UofA, EAP), Northwest Alberta Industry- Government Working Group (c.$170,000, 11-years)

Avian species ( ): Songbird & Owl research (EMEND), National Boreal Avian Modeling initiative (UofA), Alberta Migratory Bird Toolkit (Industry Coalition), NCASI National Avian BMP Toolkit (18-years)

Alberta Wolverine Projects ( ): Alberta harvest study, Northern Alberta ecology studies, UofA- ACA collaboration with industry, trappers & northern Indigenous peoples ($30,000, 3-years)

Boreal Research Institute ( ): NW Alberta natural resources awareness / careers /professional practices training, Partners in Boreal Education, Reclamation/restoration science (20-years)

Our guest speakers: (Examples -local stewardship effort) work toward sustainability & wide-ranging uses of public forest landscapes Dwayne Buchholtz (Director Peace Valley Snow Riders) -A story of community-group championing a northern skidoo trail network Promoting responsible & safe snowmobiling Collaboration with government & other stakeholders Reducing footprint in motorized recreation sport across environmental damage risk, limiting distribution of wildlife sensory disturbance & reducing private land trespass issues. Group s history and membership, Why a designated trail system, Club accomplishments and momentum

Our guest speakers: (Examples -local stewardship effort) work toward sustainability & wide-ranging uses of public forest landscapes Chris Briggs /Josef Macleod (Fisheries biologists Alberta EAP) Paul Hvenegaard (Manager Northwest Region, AB Conservation Association) -A story of government-conservation organization collaboration in addressing a sensitive fishery (Arctic Grayling) identified by PAC as a local species of interest Grayling ecology / distinctions & Official species status (Alberta) NW AB inventories synopsis (gaps, baseline, historic trends -northern Alberta) Distinct vs. complementary agency roles (Grayling management, monitoring) Examples of science contributing knowledge (e.g ACA fragmentation studies) Scoping the challenges, and forming guidance for species-management Accounting for effects of seasonality (Grayling populations, Habitat-quality) Climate change impact assessments on fisheries sustainability Links to AB Fish Conservation and Management Strategy (Goals) -Links to Provincial field standards for industry (aquatic & riparian protection), Sport-fishing rules, and Land Use management in White Zone : Green Zone. Practical messages from Alberta aquatic biodiversity research & monitoring/surveys

Future Meeting themes.others? Others: Boreal Research Institute-NAIT (Boreal Education Program-20yrs local partnership, Reclamation-science programs & greenhouse technology) Grizzly Bear (Chinchaga research, citizen-science innovations, recovery >local collaboration industry/government/academics) Woodland Caribou (Chinchaga ecology, research, range assessment, planning)
