Position Details Job Title: Lead Forestry Technician (IHC Squad Leader) Series and Grade: GS-462-6/7 Job Announcement Number: OCRP-462-IHCSQDLR-6/7 DP & G Duty Location: Monument, CO Pike Interagency Hotshot Crew Duties: The incumbent serves as a lead Forestry Technician on an Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC Hotshot Squad Leader) for a National shared resource hotshot program. The primary purpose of this position is to lead a small (6-10) crew of highly effective and trained firefighters in wildland fire suppression and wildland urban interface/intermix incidents. This position may also serve as an assistant to the Assistant Hotshot Superintendent. Performs wildfire suppression support as directed within training and physical capabilities. Performs other duties as assigned. Duties listed are at the full performance level. Key Requirements: Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required. Must meet Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirements. Must meet FS-FPM qualifications by 10/1/2013. Primary firefighter retirement covered position. Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver s License. 5 Duty Location: Monument, CO Pike Interagency Hotshot Crew Duties: The position is located on an Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC Hotshot Senior Firefighter) for a National shared resource hotshot program. The purpose of the position is wildland fire suppression/management/control as a specialized firefighter with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of specialized tools or equipment. Other wildland fire related duties may involve fire prevention, patrol, detection, or prescribed burning. Key Requirements: Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required. Must meet Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirements. Must meet IFPM qualifications. Primary firefighter retirement covered position. Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver s License. Duties: This position serves in a key fire management position in a field fire management organization as a Prescribed Fire/Fuels Technician preparing and implementing prescribed fire plans, fire effects monitoring plans, manual and mechanical hazardous fuels treatments, and smoke and wildland fire use monitoring plans. The incumbent integrates prescribed fire/fuels management, smoke management, fuels modification principles and procedures, fire effects knowledge, and knowledge of scientific data collection and analysis principles into a comprehensive prescribed fire/fuels management program for a unit(s). 6 Duty Location: Woodland Park, CO Duties: Serves as a lead wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine. Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation. Personally performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives. Has specialized duties such as water handling specialist, fully qualified chain saw operator, or responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Serves as initial attack Incident Commander. Performs wildfire suppression support as directed within training and physical capabilities and other duties as assigned. Key Requirements: Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required. Must meet Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirements. Must meet IFPM qualifications. Pikes Peak Ranger District Fire Program The Pikes Peak Ranger District office is located in Colorado Springs but has suppression resources stationed in the towns of Woodland Park and Monument. The Woodland Park Work center consists of 1-Type 3 and 1-Type 6 engine, a fuels squad, AFMO, and a recreation crew. The Monument Fire Center is home to the Pike Hotshots and Monument Helitack Crew. The District has an active fire program. The unique climate, diverse vegetation, rugged terrain and overall visitor use generally make each fire season a challenge. The District averages about statistical fires per year, during a season that generally runs from April through October, although we respond to fires year-round. The climate for this area is moderate. All four seasons are distinct, yet fairly mild and uncomfortable extremes in the summer or winter are very rare. The District has employees with a diverse range of skills and talents which result in a highly productive and enabled work force. The Pikes Peak Ranger District is one of three Pike National Forest Districts. The Pikes Peak District works closely with both the South Park and South Platte Ranger Districts.

7 Duty Station Specifics PIKE & SAN ISABEL NATIONAL FORESTS AND CIMARRON/COMANCHE NATIONAL GRASSLANDS. The Pike & San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands are in southern Colorado. These Forests and Grasslands have eight Ranger Districts. The Forest Ranger Districts are: Leadville, Salida, San Carlos, Pikes Peak, South Park, and South Platte Ranger Districts. Grassland Ranger Districts consist of the: Comanche and Cimarron Ranger Districts. The Forest Supervisor s Office is located in Pueblo, Colorado. The Forest and Grasslands have a complexity of resources including range, timber, wildlife, water, wilderness areas, developed and dispersed recreation, and ski areas. The Pikes Peak Ranger District is located in the Pike National Forest, and is situated at the base of Pikes Peak otherwise known as America s Mountain. The physical location of the Pikes Peak District offers many opportunities for partnership ventures with the BLM, Colorado State Parks, and the State Division of Wildlife. The Pikes Peak Ranger District manages a total of about 250,000 acres, and intersects three counties- El Paso, Teller, and Douglas.
