Co-ordinating the demands of substrate and colour in this way, Sikkens has produced an outstanding range of 6 translucent wood tones from the Natural Balance Collection and an inspirational 6 opaque colours from the 0 Colour Concept. This will enable many new and creative possibilities to enhance the natural beauty and characteristics of high performance Western Red Cedar and Accoya TM cladding. As part of Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings, Sikkens is recognised as the premium brand throughout the world of professional Woodcare. Both the factory and brush applied product ranges complement market-leading performance with extended planned maintenance programmes. INTRODUCTION

3 WESTERN RED CEDAR WESTERN RED CEDAR Western Red Cedar s unique range of properties includes its workability, performance, versatility and weather-resistant characteristics; making it the enduring choice for cladding. ACCOYA TM Accoya TM is modified wood for the future - today. This form of modification has resulted in significant improvements in timber cladding performance, allied with design flexibility. ACCOYA TM Readily available Aesthetically pleasing Known history in-use Sustainable resource 60 year service life The highest possible dimensional stability Longest coating warranties available 00% non-toxic

4 WESTERN RED CEDAR WESTERN RED CEDAR Western Red Cedar s performance characteristics and lasting durability combine to bring form to function; its exceptional beauty brings warmth, character and longevity. ACCOYA TM The natural, uniform colour appearance and exceptional performance qualities of Accoya TM make it the material of choice for applications only previously considered feasible ACCOYA TM for less-sustainable materials. The unique properties of Western Red Cedar enable end uses distinct from other softwood species. It is renowned for its naturally inherent resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage. Its natural durability, dimensional stability and exceptional beauty make it ideal for use as an external cladding material. More than 7 years of research and development have gone into the wood modification properties of Accoya TM. Only naturally occurring wood compounds have been used to create a cladding material to outlast and out-perform others.

6 SIKKENS FULLY FACTORY FINISHED AND EXTENDED BRUSH APPLIED MAINTENANCE The exterior finish of a building is the face that it presents to the world; it defines the mood and the character of the structure and reflects the image desired by its designers, builders and owners. Sikkens, while acknowledging the variety of timber species for use as cladding material, has dedicated this guide to the two types which are considered best suited to this challenging use. SIKKENS Sikkens manufactures a range of low maintenance translucent and opaque coating systems for factory application and has developed innovative products that perform particularly well on both Western Red Cedar and Accoya, providing maximum durability and longevity. As a controlled film thickness can be achieved during the application process, factory finished timber components require fewer coats when maintained as part of the Sikkens Sentinel Plus planned maintenance programme, reducing extensive preparation work and keeping life costs to a minimum. Sikkens partners with first class cladding manufacturers to provide the best recommendations and solutions for all types of specification. If sourcing factory finished cladding is not an option and the timber is to be coated on-site, Sikkens offers a wide range of brush applied translucent or opaque coating systems. WEATHERED UN-WEATHERED FACTORY APPLIED PRODUCTS ON-SITE MAINTENANCE PRODUCTS Compatible factory & brush applied coating systems 8 Offers a range of market leading coating system guarantees Provides extended planned maintenance by means of Sentinel Plus Grey shades from the Natural Balance collection to authentically replicate the weathered look of cladding timbers In situ, the appearance of both Western Red Cedar and Accoya will vary once exposed to the elements If left untreated, the appearance and rate of weathering will vary depending on orientation, light, moisture, atmospheric pollution and other factors. Experience has shown this weathering to be variable; therefore a uniform grey or freshly sawn coloured coating system can be used to achieve this effect. Further, if either the original richness of the freshly sawn or weathered silver grey colour is to be retained; a planned brush applied maintenance programme will be required. 9

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY Sikkens supports the legal and sustainable timber certification schemes, which are based on publicly available forestry standards drawn up in a fully participatory, transparent and objective manner and backed by independent auditing. Where possible, consideration should be given to timber and wood products sourced from Forest areas certified under these schemes.
