2 THE NATIONAL TREE PLANTING EXERCISE FOR THE OCTOBER TO DECEMBER 2018 SHORT RAIN SEASON Introduction: Deforestation, degradation of forests, desertification as well as global warming are some of the major threats to sustainable development that continue to negatively affect the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. The constitution provides for the right to a clean environment to all the people of Kenya. In the same spirit all the citizens of Kenya are called to work together towards establishing and maintaining a 10% tree cover according to the Constitution of Kenya article 69. His Excellency the President has invited all Kenyans to rally together to achieve this goal by year 2022 for the forest sector s contribution to the big four agenda: access to affordable universal free health, food security, affordable housing and manufacturing. Consequently, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoE&F) has organized a National tree planting exercise as part of its campaign to increase forest cover to 10% by the year The MoE& F in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other stakeholders has initiated a campaign focusing on growing trees (including fruit trees) in schools, Technical and Vocational Education and Training Institutions, Colleges and Universities, farmlands and drylands during the short rainfall season, October - November - December When & Where will the campaign be held? The campaign is ongoing countrywide. To this end various tree growing activities have been scheduled in the 47 Counties. Ongoing in: Trans Nzoia, UasinGishu, Bungoma, Busia, Nandi, Kericho, Vihiga, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay. 2nd to 3rd Week October Marsabit, Mandera, Samburu, Isiolo, Baringo, Wajir,Laikipia,, TharakaNithi, Nyeri, Embu, Nakuru, Muranga, Kiambu, Nairobi 3rd to 4th Week October West Pokot, Turkana, Migori, Kisii, Bomet, Narok, Kajiado,Garissa, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, the northern parts of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Tana River 4th Week October to 1st Week November Taita Taveta and the southern parts of Kitui, Makueni and Tana River. 2 Who is involved in the National tree planting exercise? Various stakeholders will support and participate in tree planting activities. For the eastern regime rainfall season, we shall engage stakeholders in specific build-up activities, so they can support the tree planting events for example the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), Inter Religious Council of Kenya, NGOs, local farmers, schools and colleges, within the targeted communities. All Kenyans, young and old are encouraged to go out and plant as many trees as possible this year as we seek to reverse environmental degradation by doubling forest cover. How can I be involved? All Kenyans are encouraged to grow trees. In order to ensure that the trees are well taken care of after the planting season, learners in schools are encouraged to adopt a tree. Various institutions are encouraged to adopt forests and encourage staff to take care of the trees. Where can I get tree seedlings? The Kenya Forest Service Offices, Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Offices (KALRO) and privately owned nurseries. There will be Forest Officers available to provide guidance on tree planting methods and suitable trees to plant. A full list of tree nurseries per County can be found in this brochure and on the websites of the following institutions: Ministry of Environment, MoE, KFS, KEFRI, KMD, KARLO, KWTA, NEMA, NETFUND, NEC, DRSRS, CDD. What is the National Tree Planting Campaign? The Campaign is aimed at mobilizing Kenyans to embrace the culture of growing trees, so that they can contribute to increasing our national forest cover, enhance environmental sustainability and improve livelihoods. The government targets to grow at least 1.8 billion trees by The Government will provide technical support to all Kenyans. forthe public and private sector institutions taking part in the National Tree Planting Campaign.
