In this study, smples of orientl eeh (Fgus Orientlis L.) nd Sots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) with six different protetion methods were used. The roughness inrese, olour nd visul-mrosopi hnges ourred on the surfes of treted nd untreted wood smples, exposed to outdoor onditions, were ompred. The impregntion nd het-treted orientl eeh nd Sots pine were oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorne. The results showed tht the oting system inresed the visul nd physil performne of wood smples in outdoor onditions. Moreover, wooden houses provide unique housing lterntive tht does not involve destroying the nturl euty of the mountins [Atsoy et l. 009]. However, wooden mountin houses re prolemti due to the ft tht wooden mterils used under externl environmentl onditions re sujet to degrdtion due to UV light, moisture, temperture vritions, wind nd tmospheri ftors (oxygen, ir polluting gses sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, et.) [Özgenç 0]. Different methods hve een suggested to mke wood more resistnt ginst surfe degrdtion nd olour hnges. These methods inlude: impregntion, het tretment, hemil modifition pplitions, nd ertin surfe otings. Tretment with opper nd hrome ontining mterils espeilly, protets wood ginst degrdtions in outdoor onditions [Willims 00; Zhor 0; Ozgen nd Yildiz 0]. 2 wood preservtion mteril, ginst outdoor onditions ws found to e lower thn tht of the opper hromed rsente (CCA) mteril [Temiz et l. 00]. The effet of new genertion opper sed mironized opper quternry (MCQ) preservtive in slowing down the deteriortion of wood under outdoor onditions ws found to e higher thn tht of ACQ preservtive [Ozgen et l. 0]. The reson is tht the mount of opper wshed out from ACQ-treted Sots pine-wood ws signifintly higher when ompred to the MCQ mteril [Cooper nd Ung 009]. Severl dvned pplitions were exmined to prevent the wshing-out of the opper from the wood. Aording to MIntyre [00], the wshing-out rte signifintly dropped when MCQ-impregnted wood ws sujeted to surfe oting. Het tretment, whih is nother protetive method, ensures derese in free hydroxyl groups nd mkes the wood less hygrosopi. A signifint derese in frtures due to UV light nd rin ours s result of inresed dimensionl stiliztion in het-treted wood surfes [Koefe et l. 008; Srivins nd Pndey 0]. Reserh onduted found tht het tretment is not suffiient to preserve the wood in outdoor onditions [Sholz et l. 00; Hohmńsk et l. 0]. Therefore, vrious surfe otings suh s polyurethne vrnish, polyester vrnish, ryli resin, UV sorne ontining surfe oting mterils were eing pplied to the het treted wood surfes [Sh et l. 0; 0]. High degrees of resistne to physil nd hemil hnges under outdoor onditions were otined y pplying surfe otings to het-treted wood [Sh et l. 0]. The im of this study ws to identify the performne of the new genertion wood preservtive with mironized opper formultion, het tretment nd surfe oting methods in wood types frequently used for mountin house onstrution in the Estern Blk Se region. This study ompred the resistne of wood protetion nd surfe-oting methods pplied to Sots pine nd orientl eeh wood speies under outdoor onditions. Mterils nd methods Preprtion smples nd pre- tretment proess Defet-free smples with dimensions of 00 mm in length y 0 mm in width nd 0 mm in depth from the spwood of two speies, orientl eeh (Fgus orientlis L.) nd Sots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were onditioned in limte room of C nd reltive humidity of % until moisture ontent of % ws rehed. Lter smples were lightly snded with 0 grit sndpper. Smples were treted with wter-sed wood preservtive nd mironized opper ontining opper-sed fungiide, whih is n orgni o-ioide. The ommeril ompny, Osmose In., supplied the hemils. Four smples from eh speies were treted with MCQ with onentrtion of %. Eh wood smple ws impregnted inside lortory type tnk y the full-ell method.

3 Wethering performne of wood surfe oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer The proedure involved pplying n initil pressure of 00 mm Hg in vuum for minutes, nd 8 rs for the following minutes. All speimens were lightly wiped with pper npkin to remove ny exess solution from their surfe nd weighed t n ury of 0.0 g to determine the retention vlue of the hemil in the smples [AWPA U-09]. Two speies of spwood were onditioned in limte room with temperture of C nd reltive humidity of % until they rehed moisture ontent of out %. Het tretment ws then pplied to four smples from eh speies in n oven. The temperture ws ontrolled with ± C sensitivity, t two different tempertures (orientl eeh t 90 C for 90 min. nd Sots pine t C for 90 min.) under stem tmosphere (ThermoWood proess) in n industril plnt, in Novwood, Gerede, Turkey. Formultion of the oting systems The wter-sed impregntion gent, hving tive ingredients of.0% propionzole, nd 0.0% iodopropynylutylrmte, ws used s primer for the protetion of the smples ginst iologil deteriortion, inluding soft rot nd lue stin. The primer ws pplied to the smples t spred of 0 g/m using rush. Two types of sorers, the UV sreener the UVA of hydroxyphenyl-strizines lss s n orgni UV sorer (UV) nd TiO s n inorgni UV sorer (UV) were used. Commerilly produed finishing, hving ryli resin, opolymer dispersion of methylrylte/methylmethrylte/utylrylte, ws used s topot for the speimens. A smll mount of defomer nd,,-trimethyl-,-pentndiolemonoisoutyrte, texnol s olesending gent ws dded in the topot formultion to redue the effet of other dditives on the photostiliztion performne. Three lyers of topots were lso pplied to eh smple t spred rte of 00 g/m y rush. Lter, the speimens were snded with 0 grit size of sndpper nd kept t

Nturl wethering test were pled in plteus of vrious ltitudes, nd then the ontrol nd test wood smples were pled, ording to EN 9- stndrd, in the experimentl stnd pled on the Uzungöl nd Hıdırnei plteus in Trzon, Turkey. The wethering test ontinued for months. Aording to dt otined from the Deprtment of Meteorology, Ministry of Forestry nd Wter Affirs of Turkey: the verge nnul ir temperture for the Uzungöl plteu is 8 C, moisture is 80%, preipittion is mm, nd wind veloity is.0 m/s; nd the nnul verge ir temperture for the Hıdırnei plteu is C, moisture 0%, preipittion is 0 mm, nd wind veloity is.80 m/s. Surfe olour nd roughness mesurement Colour mesurements were onduted with Koni Minolt CM-00d instrument ording to the ISO stndrd. Mesurements were onduted t the end of UV irrdition step to provide onsistent speimen onditions. Eight replites were used for eh smple to evlute olour hnge. The Mitutoyo Surfest SJ-0 instrument ws used for surfe roughness mesurements. The R nd Rz roughness prmeters were mesured to evlute surfe roughness of the wood smples surfes ording to DIN 8.

5 Wethering performne of wood surfe oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer 9 Surfe mrosopi evlution Generl imges for surfe erosions of ontrol nd test wood smples sujeted to the nturl wethering test were evluted in ordne with the ASTM D -9 stndrd. Test nd ontrol smples were exmined fter the wethering test nd point sle of 0 (flwless surfe with no erosion) to 0 (surfe with high level of erosion) ws used. Aording to the sle, wood smple with no erosion on its surfe fter the wethering test ws evluted s 0. However, rked wood surfe ws evluted s 0. Sttistil evlutions The results of the surfe olour nd roughness nlyses were evluted on the sis of the men vlues, stndrd devitions, nd y sttistis using Dunn s test (Sttisti.0). Liner orreltions (Mirosoft Exel) were then determined etween the olour hnges nd different tretment methods for wood smples. Results nd disussion Colour hnge As n e oserved from tle, ording to the results of the wethering test in the Hıdırnei nd Uzungöl plteus, olour hnges on the wood surfe oted y ryli resin ontining UV sorer re muh lower in omprison to the ontrol smples. It is determined tht the olour hnges t the wood smples sujeted to externl environmentl onditions in the Uzungöl nd Hıdırnei plteus re rther similr. The similrity of the disolouring results of wood smples left in two plteus with different onditions is pproved y the Dunn s Test. Tle shows tht, the highest olour stiliztion ws found in wood smples oted y ryli resin ontining UV sorer fter the pre-tretment proedures (MCQ impregntion nd het tretment). Aording to some studies, the olour stiliztion inreses nd deformtions like rks, splitting, wering derese t wood surfes under externl environmentl onditions with pplied oting fter therml tretment. [Srivins nd Pndey 0]. Coting the surfe of het-treted wood with wether resistnt oting mteril signifintly prevents olour hnges [Sh et l. 0; Sh et l. 0]. Temiz et l. [00] found tht olour stiliztion of wood impregnted with opper-ontining mterils under wethering onditions inresed. However, some mount of opper ws wshed wy from the wood surfe y rin. The MCQ mteril developed on the sis of the mironized opper system, ws found to hve signifintly lower wshing-out rte [Brnes et l. 008; Zhor 0]. Ozgen et l. [0] found tht the pplition of wter resistnt ryli resin with UV sorne onto wood impregnted with opper-ontining preservtive mteril improves olour stiliztion.

6 0 When ompred to the Sots pine, olour hnges ourring in the ontrol smples of orientl eeh, whih hs more dense struture, were found to e lower. Colour hnge vlues of orientl eeh nd Sots pine smples oted with ryli resin with UV sorne were lower thn the ontrol smples [Nowzyk-Orgnist 009]. Aording to the olour hnge results, optiml olour stiliztion ws hieved with the pre-treted wood oted with ryli resin ontining n inorgni UV sorer t the Hıdırnei nd Uzungöl plteus. Colour hnge vlues in wood smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer were found to e signifintly higher thn those in smples oted with ryli resin ontining inorgni UV sorne. As n e seen from tle, Δ*, Δ*, ΔL* nd ΔE* olour hnge prmeters were provided for test nd ontrol smples exposed to -month wethering test in the Hıdırnei nd Uzungöl plteus. It ws determined tht the surfes in ontrol smples eme drker, inditing negtive lightness stility (ΔL*) vlues during the wethering test nd similr results re otined in some studies ville in literture [Ozgen et l. 0; Hohmńsk et l. 0; Reinpreht nd Hull 0]. The lowest vlues of ΔL* were otined on untreted wood smples. The (ΔL*) vlues of Orientl eeh test smples tests in Hıdırnei nd Uzungöl plteus were positive. The highest (ΔL*) vlues were otined from het-treted orientl eeh smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer nd non-treted smples oted with ryli resin ontining n orgni UV sorer. As for the Sots pine wood, while het-treted smples oted with ryli resin ontining the orgni UV sorer nd non-treted smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer hd positive nd highest (ΔL*) vlues, other test smples hd low nd negtive (ΔL*) vlues. Positive vlues of Δ* indite n inrement of yellow olour nd negtive vlues indite n inrese of lue olour. Positive vlues of Δ* indite tendeny of the wood surfe to go reddish olour while negtive vlues men tendeny for it to go greenish [Ozgen et l. 0]. After the wethering test, the (Δ*) vlues of the test nd ontrol smples were found to e different to eh other vlue. As for the Sots pine wood, test smples exluding the smples sujeted to pre-tretment with MCQ hd negtive (Δ*) vlues. The (Δ*) vlues of het-treted Sots pine wood oted with ryli resin ontining n orgni UV sorer nd non-treted smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer were found to hve positive vlue nd were signifintly high. The (Δ*) vlues were found to hve positive vlue in the ontrol smples nd orientl eeh smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer, nd negtive vlue in Sots pine exept for smples oted with ryli resin ontining orgni UV sorer (tle ).

8 Surfe roughness Surfe roughness vlues of orientl eeh nd Sots pine wood smples efore nd fter the wethering test re given in tle. When ompred to the Sots pine wood, the inrese in surfe roughness vlues of orientl eeh ontrol smples fter the wethering test ws found to e quite high [Feist 990]. During the wethering tests, the wood surfe rpidly sors rin nd the reltive humidity nd enloses these within the wood ell wlls with pillry movement [Reinpreht nd Hull 0]. Moreover, rin nd the reltive humidity result in n inrese of the wood surfe roughness nd retion produts nd the removl of rohydrtes through hydroliztion [Willims 00]. Therefore, oting of wood surfes with wter resistnt mterils signifintly prevents the inrese in surfe roughness [Evns et l. 008]. As n e seen from tle, the post-wethering test hnge in surfe roughness vlues of wood smples oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer is quite low. Similr studies report tht oting the wood surfes with wter resistnt surfe otings nd MCQ tretment signifintly redues surfe erosion nd inreses the surfe roughness under outdoor onditions [Freemn nd MIntrye 008]. Mrosopi evlution Due to ftors suh s the region s ltitude, limte onditions, ir pollution, et. differ in the two pilot regions seleted for the wethering test, the visul evlution points of smples were found to e different s well. As shown in figure nd, efore the wethering test, the visul evlution of the test nd ontrol wood smples is quite high. After the wethering test, the visul evlution performne of test nd ontrol smples from the Hıdırnei plteu ws found to e higher in omprison to those from the Uzungöl plteu (fig. nd ). The reson is tht when ompred to the Hıdırnei plteu, smples from the Uzungöl plteu were found to hve denser pollution. Moreover, non-treted wood smples oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer were found to hve deformtions on their sides fter the wethering. The dirt lyer forming on the wood surfe oted with wter resistnt ryli resin ontining UV sorer n e lened with slightly dmp loth [Nowzyk-Orgnist 008; Xie et l. 008; Nejd 0].

In omprison to the ontrol smples, mrosopi evlution of wood surfes oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer reeived quite high points [Ozgen nd Yildiz 0] (tle ). It n e seen from Tle tht espeilly wood smples oted with ryli resin ontining UV sorer fter MCQ impregntion tretment reeived quite high visul evlution points. Other studies lso show tht the pplition of ryli resin ontining UV sorer on the wood surfes yields high performne under outdoor onditions [Custόdio nd Euséio 00]. Aording to previous studies, the oting tretment with wter repelling trnsprent ryli resin does not provide effetive protetion ginst photo-degrdtion in wethering onditions. However, high durility performne of wood surfes oted with ryli resin orgni or inorgni UV sorer ws determined [Shller et l. 008; Forsthuer et l. 0].

Conlusions A firly high preservtion is otined ginst externl environmentl onditions of wood surfes treted with UV sorer ontining ryli resin. The pplition of UV soring ryli resin to wood surfes sujeted to MCQ impregntion nd het tretment improves olour stility nd signifintly prevents the inrese in surfe roughness. While the UV sorption rte is low in ontrol wood surfes under the effet of UV light nd rin, there ws smll hnge in the UV sorption rtes in wood smples oted with UV soring ryli resin. Severl differenes were identified during n exmintion of orgni nd inorgni UV soring sustnes in terms of resistne to nturl wether onditions. Wood smples oted with ryli resin with inorgni UV sorne fter MCQ impregntion tretment yielded espeilly good results in terms of olour stility, roughness vlues nd mrosopi evlution. As for the wood smples oted with inorgni UV sorne ryli resin fter preservtive tretment, the derese in UV sorption fter the wethering test ws found to e the smllest. After the nturl wethering test, espeilly due to ftors suh s ir pollution, degrdtion ourring in wood smples from the Uzungöl plteu ws higher in omprison to those from the Hıdırnei plteu. Aording to the mrosopi evlution, the ryli oting systems inluding UV sorers ompletely eliminte erosion suh s the formtion of rks, ters nd fire stnd-up on wooden surfes. It is thought tht experimenttions shll e onduted y pplying vrious wter resistnt surfe-oting systems on wood with nd without preliminry preservtive tretment ginst degrdtion ourring under outdoor onditions.
