1 Revision Date: Examiner: Dan Racine Legal Description: T36N, R2W, Sections, 2, and 3 Compartment Review Presentation Escanaba Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County 33 2,29 Menominee Management Area: Green Bay Lake Plain Identified Planning Goals: The major cover types within this compartment are aspen, cedar and mixed upland deciduous and mixed upland forest types. The treatments within this compartment are designed to enhance the age class distribution and regeneration of the existing overstory species in the upland and lowland cover types. The majority of the upland cover type treatments are aspen and several stands within the upland cover types consist of pine regeneration. The treatments within the upland cover types will enhance the pine, aspen, mixed conifer and deciduous species. The treatments within the lowland cover types will include cedar retention pockets and enhance the both the mixed deciduous and mixed conifer regeneration. Soil and topography: Soil and Topography: The soils in this compartment include Pickford muck silt clay loam, Deford Wainola Rousseau complex, Rousseau fine sand, Deford mucky fine sand, and Tawas Deford complex. The compartment is nearly level with some ridges and depressions. A few of the stands proposed for treatments may require operating in the soil types during the snow free season to enhance conifer reproduction. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: The compartment includes County Road, 7 Mile Marsh Road, and North Fox Road. A significant portion of the roads are also dedicated to the Forest Island ORV Trail. There are a couple of parcels in this compartment that are private lands with the majority in state land. There may be some private property access needs for the treatments of some stands within the compartment Unique Natural Features: The Big Cedar River traverses the western side of the compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: None known Special Management Designations or Considerations: None Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Wildlife Habitat Considerations: The Big Cedar River is a major water course that traverses the west edge of the compartment. Forest stands on the east side of the river have been designated a Special Conservation Area to promote mature conditions. This will be valuable for riparian wildlife. For example, bald eagle nest sites can be provided by managing for old, large trees while minimizing disturbance. This compartment is predominantly aspen forest with scattered stands of pine, northern hardwood, and lowland conifer cover types. Much of this acreage will continue to be managed for aspen, providing benefits to earlysuccessional wildlife species (such as chestnut-sided warbler, ruffed grouse, deer, hare, and bobcats). aspen stands are showing a natural inclination to convert over time ( to years) to white pine or balsam fir. Due to the large loss of upland conifer forest over the past century, and recent disease concerns, these natural conversions will be encouraged through silvicultural prescriptions. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. The glacial drift thickness varies between and feet. The Ordovician Trenton Formation underlies the glacial drift and is quarried for stone west of Escanaba. This area has not been leased for metallic exploration previously. A gravel pit is located in Sections 2 and there is potential on the upland 6/27/26 9:32:26 AM - Page of 2 POLEYN

2 drumlins. No economic oil and gas production has been found in the UP. Vehicle Access: Access to this compartment is County Road, 7 Mile Marsh Road, and North Fox Road. The majority of the compartment has roads that are open to the public with access through state land. The stands west of the Big Cedar River and a portion throughout the compartment have access through private. Survey Needs: There will be some private line work on some of the stands proposed for treatment. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The Forest Island ORV Trail traverses throughout this compartment. The Big Cedar River provides canoe and fishing opportunities. There are hunting, bird watching, and other recreational activities available throughout this compartment. Fire Protection: There are no significant fire danger problems within this compartment. The largest water source is the Big Cedar River with some intermittent streams and tributaries throughout the compartment. Additional Compartment Information: The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total by Cover Type and Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed s No Limiting Factors Proposed s With Limiting Factors Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 6/27/26 9:32:26 AM - Page 2 of 2 POLEYN

Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 2. A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows.
