Rifat HISARCIKIOGLU Secretary General: Mr. Ufuk YILMAZ Affiliated companies: more than 700 Year of establishment: 1988 Website: The foremost purpose of the DEİK is to pave the way for the development of Turkey s economic, commercial, industrial and financial relations with foreign countries as well as international business communities. DEİK believes that increasing industrial cooperation, widening the foreign trade network and opening the Turkish service sector up to the global economy are essential in achieving this target. The organization has been structured to include a General Assembly, a Board of Directors, an Executive board, a Board of Auditors and a Secretariat General. General Assembly The General Assembly is composed of representatives from the founding private sector institutions, Chairmen of the existing Business Councils, representatives appointed by the Executive Board of TOBB (Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey) and honorary members. Board of Directors The board of directors is is elected by the General Assembly for the duration of two years and it is composed by 26 members. 1

2 Executive Board The Executive Board directs and coordinates DEİK activities in the light of the strategies and policies determined by the Board of Directors. The Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors is also the Chairman of DEİK s Executive Board. Board of Auditors The Board of Auditors is composed by 5 members. The Board of Auditors is composed of 5 members elected by DEİK s Board of Directors for two years. It is responsible for auditing all of DEİK s activities. Secretariat General DEİK s Secretariat General carries out necessary activities such as research, coordination and organization for all Business Councils. DEİK s Secretariat General manages and supervises all the activities of the Business Councils and their relations with other private sector institutions, embassies and ministries as well as counterpart institutions. Furthermore, the Secretariat General is responsible for setting up, coordinating and supervising all relations with international and regional economic, financial, research institutions and universities in Turkey and relevant countries. 3.Main services and activities DEİK mainly operates through Bilateral Business Councils. DEIK s Bilateral Business Councils are established by a cooperation agreement signed with foreign counterparts with the purpose of promoting business relations. These Business Councils ensure an effective follow-up mechanism and a continuous flow of information to member companies on trade and industrial cooperation possibilities. Business Councils consist of two sides, one is the Turkish side and the other one is a counterpart institution in the relevant country, which is usually a representative body of the country s private sector. The Councils meet regularly each year. There are 84 business councils operating under DEİK. The Turkish sides of Business Councils are formed by member companies who have already undertaken business relations or who plan to develop such relations with each relevant country. The World Turkish Business Council is a newly established Business Council which is composed of Turkish companies operating outside Turkey, business associations established by Turkish businessmen in foreign countries, senior executives of Turkish origin in leading multinational corporations and other international institutions. In addition to organizing Business Council activities, DEİK also takes a proactive and direct role in the cooperation with both regional and international organizations, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). 2

3 The Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) Secretary General: Mr. Mete MELEKSOV Project Manager: Mr. Korkmaz YILDIRIM Affiliated companies: 13,000 members (mainly SMEs) Year of establishment: 1952 Website: The main objective of İstanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) is to fulfill the existing and future needs of the Turkish industry through information, training and consulting services, to improve the international competitiveness of our industry and country and to contribute to the development of the country as a whole. The Chamber Assembly The ISO s Assembly is the organization s main decision-making, regulatory and auditing body. Board of Directors ISO s Board of Directors acts as the organization s executive body. It consists of 11 elected members who serve four-year terms within the assembly. The board s main function is overseeing ISO s administrative needs to ensure the organization is working in the best general interest of the chamber. General Secretariat The administrative organization utilizes the general secretariat as its main resource for finding solutions to economic, legal, social and cultural issues within Turkey. ISO s General Secretariat consists of one secretary general, who is appointed by ISO s Board of directors and serves as the administrative organization s chief officer, and 3 Deputy Secretary General. Industry Group Head The Group Heads are the supervisors of the departments and units subordinate to them and ensure the development of the services provided by their respective groups, the coordination of their work, and their inspection in every manner. 3. Main services and activities The services that the İstanbul Chamber of Industry provides to its members may be gathered in two main groups. The first group comprises the services provided on the basis of the reporting responsibility originating from the legislation in effect. The second comprises services performed for the purpose of enhancing the competitive power of the members. ISO provides all kinds of professional information required, conducting in-depth surveys, studies and research on various fields of interest. 3

4 The Chamber is engaged also in consulting and organizational activities, training and awarenessrising activities, offering always professional and up-to-date opinions on economic and industry issues. In particular, the European Commission has established the Euro Info Centers (EIC) in order to facilitate its members in doing business in Europe. There are nearly 300 EICs in the EIC network that began its activities in The experienced personnel of İstanbul Chamber of Industry, who are specialized on different subjects, support the Euro Info Center team when required. The most important medium for providing these services to the members is the web site of Euro Info Center updated every day. There are business and investment proposals, fairs, committee visit and seminar announcements, information banks concerning legislation, EU and markets on this extremely useful website. Furthermore, the Chamber has established the Department of Environment, which conducts studies regarding the "environment" for implementing the concept of "sustainable development" based on utilizing the resources effectively, decreasing waste, protecting human health and environmental quality, perceiving the concepts of economic development and environment protection as inseparable, to support the studies of its members in this context and to improve the environmental awareness. Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) President: Mr. Rizanur MERAL Vice President: Mr. Mustafa GUNAY Affiliated companies: 162 business members Year of establishment: 2005 Website: As the most widespread non-governmental, non-profit institution representing business community in Turkey, Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists of Turkey, TUSKON, is dedicated to share know-how, experience and communication networks with our businessmen who would like to be global players of the today s world. TUSKON today, is an umbrella organization for 7 regional federations, 162 business associations with more than business people members in Turkey. Executive Board The executive board of TUSKON acts as the confederation s executive body. It consists of a President and Vice president, an Outreach Coordinator, a Treasurer, an Executive director and three members. 3. Main services and activities TUSKON is capable of organizing huge foreign trade programs and events as well as bilateral business meetings, business forums, seminars and field trips for ministerial dignitaries and business 4

5 delegations visiting Turkey. Some of the examples are US Trade Winds Program and business delegations of Egyptian and Kazakhstan s ministers to Turkey. TUSKON also organizes trade and investment delegations to potentially viable countries as a follow up to Trade Bridge Programs. Many of these delegations are organized by the joint efforts of TUSKON and related government agencies. Most of TUSKON delegations were led by the President of Turkey or relevant Turkish Cabinet Members. Association of Turkish travel agencies (TURSAB) President: Mr. Başaran ULUSOY Affiliated companies: Year of establishment: 1972 Website: TURSAB is a professional organization whose main aims are the development of the travel agency profession in harmony with the country s economy and tourism sector. Any issue of common interest related to or affecting the products and services offered by travel agencies, their business activities, as well as all aspects of tourism development, are considered high priority areas. Quality consideration is a point of great importance in modern tourism. As a member of several international organisations, TURSAB is represented on international platforms and makes every effort towards further promotion of bilateral, multilateral relations in tourism. A high priority issue within TURSAB s activities is training. As such TURSAB set up a self supporting foundation in Istanbul titled, "TURSAV" (The Tourism and Travel Agencies Foundation) in order to support training and educational requirements of its members in collaboration with Universities and Turkish Airlines (THY) and other concerned institutions to fulfill the educational needs of the sector. General Assembly General Assembly is the ultimate authority within TURSAB s organizational structure, where all member agencies are represented. General Assembly meets every other year and also can be invited for extraordinary meeting by the Executive Board or the Ministry. Executive Board Executive Board is the governing organ, responsible for the implementation of decisions taken and programme adopted by the General Assembly as well as dealing with main issues and day-to-day management through its offices. It has nine members elected by the General Assembly for an office term of two years. Inspection and Disciplinary councils are bodies, the members of which are also elected by the General Assembly. 5

6 Regional Chapters TURSAB has 20 Regional Chapters throughout the country. The main task of the Regional Chapters is to deal with local issues by establishing relation and in co-operation with local authorities and other organizations concerned. TURSAB also sets up committees with the participation of its members to work on specialist areas or subjects when required. 3. Main services and activities Among TURSAB s duties there are market research, studies on travel agency profession, taking measures to prevent unfair competition among its members, organization of courses and seminars for training travel agency personnel, submitting its views so requested by the Ministry, representation of the travel agencies at the international organizations. Moreover TURSAB s activities are carried out by specific departments. Research and Development Department monitors the developments in international and Turkish tourism, as well as in tourism and travel related areas. The Department continuously gathers information and data from various international and national sources, evaluates, and prepares reports on the developments and future prospects. Corporate and International Relations Department promotes its relations and co-operation with international organizations as well as associations. URSAB is an affiliate member of The United Nations World Tourism Organization UNWTO; The Group of National Travel Agencies and Tour Operators Association within the EU ECTAA. It is also the member of: Universal Federation of Travel Agents Association UFTAA; International Federation of Tour Operators IFTO; Japan Association of Travel Agents JATA; European Network for Accessible Tourism- ENAT; American Society of Travel Agents-ASTA. TURSAB, attaches great importance to the idea of regional cooperation in tourism, in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions as well as in the Balkans. Therefore it endeavors to promote its bilateral relations with its neighbors. Support To Conservation is the third Department. It is currently working on three archeological areas: The Tilmen Mound,an ancient settlement place 10 km. east of Islahiye town within Gaziantep province in the South Eastern Turkey; Dulkadirli Underground City in northeast of Kırsehir in Central Anatolia; Kayakoyu, an old deserted village, in the Southern Agean region of Turkey, is situated within the Fethiye District of the Muğla province. It had been built on the remains of the city of Karmiylassos of the antique Lycian Civilisation.
