The Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea has developed and launched a set of actions, to foster a more effective integration and governance of the principle of sustainability in public policies, both in the context of the programming period of the European Structural and Investment Fund and through national financial resources.

The Regional working table will be fully operational and will provide a methodological support for the development of the regional sustainable development strategies. An implementation document will be developed and will include objectives at 2030, linked to quantitative targets, as well as monitoring and review mechanisms and analytical models capable of measuring the impacts of policies on the NSDS objectives. The NSDS foresees an annual monitoring of its implementation status also based on the indicators provided by the National Institute of Statistics and by institutions belonging to SISTAN. The Forum on sustainable development will be launched on the 18 th of December 2018 providing a tool and a stronger role for civil society in the national implementation process.

21 Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea of Italy Way forward (EU Council Conclusions June 2017) We need to step out of our comfort zone and translate the transformational changes into long term political planning and identify short term actions (Timmermans, Sept. 2015) Potential 2030 Agenda is huge and the impacts already affecting different levels FuR (voluntary/mandat ory qualitative/quantit ative) Long term vision (2030/2050) vs short term action 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Vertical coordination: need to achieve complimentary roles through clear and mixed competences Keep the political momentum high: it took us years to put sustainable development at the center of the village Develop mechanisms to promote horizontal coordination: break the silos Let us not loose this great achievement

22 Ministry for the Environment Land and Sea of Italy Challenges and opportunities at EU level (MSP and Reflection Paper) Strategy and actions No prioritizing SDGs but finding a way to address them all Ensure effective internal and external action Overarching EU SDS (also thematic strategies) and post 2020 vision Governance Role of Council and role of Parliament (VNRs) Participation of stakeholders Vertical and horizontal integration Commission (fit for purpose) Universality Each country at every level SD no longer marginal, but integrated in every sector Common global goals we are all responsible for (role of the EU)
