3 2018 Events Thursday 15 February Retail & Town Centres Innside, Manchester This seminar will consider current and emerging trends in retail and leisure development, and consider how the planning system can help regenerate our town centres. Speakers will examine the types of retail and town centre development which remain viable in a challenging market, providing case study examples from the region. Recent case law and appeal decisions will be reviewed in order to provide clarification in respect of how the NPPF sequential and impact tests should be applied in practice. Monday 5 March Planning Law Update (1) Hotel Football, Old Trafford Infrastructure and homes continue to hit the headlines in the planning world s Legal Update will provide a general catch up on developments in the law, and will consider the Government s proposals for allocating land and speeding up the grant of permission for new housing, as well as investigating the means of funding and providing the infrastructure needed by existing and new communities. Wednesday 28 March Housing in the North West (1) Venue TBC Housing is certain to remain at the top of the political and planning agenda as we move into With guidance expected from central government on Objectively Assessed Need and the impact of many local plans coming online across the region (including at the city region level), housing issues remain at the heart of both rural, urban and community-led planning policy. This year we may see the discussion turning from delivery of numbers to how we sustain our housing growth. At this conference we ll hear from leading commentators who will address crucial areas of housing policy and practice. Wednesday 28 February Healthy places don t just stand there, let s get moving Shoosmiths, Manchester The growing agenda around critical health related issues such as sedentary lifestyles, air quality and an ageing population is integral to the future planning and design of our built environment. Spatial planning and urban design are enablers of health and wellbeing, creating places that consider these complex issues and encourage active travel, access to green space, and support the delivery of places appropriate to the population s needs. This event will provide an insight into how health, planning and urban design can combine to support successful placemaking. Wednesday 21 March Regeneration: shaping better places to live, work and play in changing times Hotel Football, Old Trafford The North West is once again the focus of investment, plans for growth and development. From Liverpool to Workington and Crewe to Lancaster, transformative regeneration schemes are in progress. This positive context is set against the debate surrounding Brexit, the GMSF and future funding to projects in the North of England. This session will focus on a range of award winning regeneration schemes to gain an understanding of how we genuinely shape better places in these ever-changing times. Wednesday 18 April The Northern Powerhouse - Dead Parrot or Elephant in the Room? Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington A great deal has changed since 2014 when the Northern Powerhouse was announced including; Brexit, two general elections and the ousting of Osborne. Does the Northern Powerhouse still mean anything? As the elected city-regional mayors settle into their posts, what power do they have to shape the North? This event will focus on the Northern Powerhouse in 2018, alongside issues around devolution, the Government s Industrial Strategy, and transport and infrastructure investment. The event will conclude with a round-table, open to all, on the future of the Great North Plan.

4 Wednesday 25 April DM Update Delivering Quality Development (1) Shoosmiths, Manchester This highly popular session is a roundup of all matters pertinent to the determination of planning applications within the English planning system. With changes from the Housing and Planning Act (2016) now bedding in, and changes to the NPPF awaited (still), 2018 could be an interesting year for determining planning applications big or small. Past years sessions have included the impact non-designated heritage assets and assets of community value through to changes to permitted development and, the ever popular planning law roundup. Wednesday 16 May Brownfield Land Making it Work Holiday Inn, Manchester With continuing pressure on brownfield development to take place over greenfield development and Green Belt release, this event will focus on making brownfield development a success. We will review how Brownfield Land Registers and Permission in Principle have progressed, remediation techniques and costs, links to viability and hear about some best practice examples including city and town centre schemes, and major programmes from developers such as the HCA. Tuesday 5 June Environment: An overview of the key issues in Planning Brockholes, Preston This event will consider some of the key environmental issues that planners must consider when new development comes forward including brownfield remediation, flooding, air quality and the interaction of blue and green infrastructure. The speakers will focus on real life examples of how these issues and opportunities can be dealt with together providing an update on best practice. Thursday 10 May Development Finance & Viability Bringing forward viable and deliverable development through the planning system Hotel Football, Old Trafford Continued government reform and streamline of the planning system will bring about change to the way that viability and deliverability of development is understood. This event brings together practitioners from the private and public sector who will offer insight and practical guidance on how proposed and confirmed planning changes might impact upon viablity and deliverablity. Considerations are likely to include the development tariff, redefinition of affordable homes and the abolishment of new build leasehold. Wednesday 23 May Local Plan Making will the tinkering ever end? Hilton, Blackpool Just when you think your Plan is nearly there - something else changes. This event will look at the ongoing challenges of preparing a Local Plan. It will look at the most recent legal precedents and case law, the latest changes to national policy, and the current issues facing policy planners. Monday 18 June Preparing for Public Inquiries Holiday Inn, Manchester The event will consider Inquiry procedure and process with specific emphasis on the role and approach to giving witness evidence. The event therefore aims to help those preparing for giving evidence at an Inquiry as well as those involved in the management of the Inquiry case and team. The event will feature a Mock Inquiry in order to share top tips when giving evidence as well as some of the tricks of the trade employed by barristers in examining witnesses.

5 Wednesday 27 June Rural Planning Macclesfield Town Hall National planning policy requires that economic growth in rural areas be supported in order to create jobs and prosperity. But is rural planning still fundamentally restrictive? This session will review the latest developments in rural planning and will explore how rural planning is evolving from a focus purely on countryside protection and the demand for food to planning for a thriving well connected rural economy reflective of diverse local economic circumstances and local distinctiveness. Wednesday 19 September Design and Heritage Innside, Manchester This event will focus on how planning and urban design can work together to unlock and shape successful urban regeneration projects. It will explore how planning and design can add value, promote sustainability, and bring delight to urban environments. The event will feature case-studies of successful urban place-making projects, and will include a practical workshop session concentrating on the skills that planners and urban designers need to positively shape better urban places. Terms and Conditions Payment must be in advance If you are not able to attend: we can accept a substitute delegate at any time. we can give you a refund if you cancel in writing at least seven days before the conference date. we cannot give refunds for cancellations after this, or for non-arrival. For reasons beyond our control, we may have to change the content or timing of the programme, the speakers, the date or the venue. In the unlikely event that the event is cancelled, we will make a full refund but disclaim any further liability. Booked delegates who fail to attend their event without notifying the Regional Coordinator in advance may be subject to an administration charge.
