1 INDIA SYMPOSIUM 2006 FRIDAY, AUGUST 25 TH 2006 RENAISSANCE HOTEL, ZURICH

2 PREFACE INDIA S GROWTH TRAJECTORY - CHALLENGING BUT TRULY PROMISING The success story of the fastest growing democracy in the world continues. Macroeconomic variables indicate an acceleration of the Indian economy. Real GDP is estimated to have grown from 7.5% in FY to 8.4% in FY Service sectors majorly drive the overall performance recording double-digit growth rates for the second consecutive year. At the same time, the Indian manufacturing industry is increasingly developing momentum with now more than 70 sectors registering medium and high growth rates. The continuous economic and structural transition is being accompanied by India s political Sanchar from a longly upheld single-party system to a more broad-based multi-party consciousness at the national level. Alliances have now become determining factors to stable political power. The evolution and acceptance of ideological diversity among coalition members, on the one hand, may affect the political decision-making process in India and in turn the pace of implementation of reforms but more importantly, on the other hand, it creates a deep-rooted legacy for future growth. The Union Budget aims not only at resolving infrastructural deficiencies through harnessing additional resources through «Public Private Partnerships» but rightly stresses on social and rural development. As one of the Government s most important medium of interest and goal articulation, the Budget not only indicates that continuation of reforms is becoming a common denominator among the different parties but also that India is eager to do so in a socially responsible and sustainable way. The aim of the India Symposium is to seek and equip our distinguished guests with a good appreciation of business potentials, economic developments, societal challenges, and political changes present in today s India and ergo aims at providing a more holistic perspective on India s contemporary integration process into the global economy. Sigu Muringaseril Founder & Chairman India Symposium Asia Research Centre, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland
