3 A. The first Americans probably came from Asia across the Bering Strait (connecting Alaska & Asia). They are the ancestors of the American Indians (Native Americans). B. After the voyage & discovery of Christopher Columbus in 1492, many Europeans came from Great Britain, Germany, France, Holland & Spain. Know the countries and be able to list them 3

4 C. Millions of Africans also came to America. In the 1600 s Europeans began bringing Africans to the New World to serve as slaves. The slave trade became illegal in 1808 & slavery itself was outlawed in 1865 at the end of the Civil War. 4

5 A. Industrialized Countries: 1. Engage in commercial activity 2. Have economic choices 3. Have transportation and communication systems 4. Provide a good standard of living for their people. 5. Examples: US, Japan, former Western European Countries 5

6 B. Developing Countries 1. Engage in subsistence activity 2. Most people are farmers, not enough food 3. Growing populations 4. Little modern technology 5. A need for transportation & communication linkages 6. Most have important minerals 7. Most do not provide a good standard of living for their people. Test=All the facts will be listed and you will have to tell me if it is an industrialized or developing country 6

7 A. Primary Industry-makes natural resources available for use. Examples-agriculture, fishing, forestry & mining B. Secondary Industry-manufacturers take resources made available by primary industry and turns in into a product. Examples-car manufacturers, processing plants C. Tertiary Industry-service industries-provide the distribution & services. Examples-transportation, communication, retail businesses, wholesale business, services (doctors, dentists, etc ) and finance Test-know the divisions of Industry and examples 7

17 7. Andrew Jackson-He supported the interests of poor farmers, laborers, & settlers who wanted Native American lands in the Southwest. 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt-He created a plan called the New Deal. 9. Harry S. Truman-Took over for Roosevelt who died in Martin Luther King, Jr. Led the Civil Rights Movement. 11. Jamestown, VA-First permanent English Settlement 12. Revolutionary War-The rebellion against British rule

18 13. Civil War-War between the North and the South, it lasted for four years. 14. Confederacy-The Southern States seceded or withdrew, from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. 15. Louisiana Purchase-With the sale of this land, it doubled the size of the United States 16. Homestead Act-It gave 160 acres of land to any adult willing to farm it and live on it for five years. 17. Cold War-A period of great tension which lasted more than 40 years, although the United States and the Soviet Union never faced each other in an actual war. 18
