3 Government Go to Mrs. Giardina s GSIC website and review the government vocabulary PowerPoint. For each pair of statements, decide which describes an autocracy (A) and which describes a democracy (D). Who holds the power? The people (citizens) hold power. One leader holds power. Citizens Rights Citizens have limited rights/freedoms. Citizens rights/freedoms are protected by law. Citizen Participation Citizens have little choice in who leads the government. Citizens vote to elect leaders. Citizens have many opportunities to participate in government. Citizens have few/no opportunities to participate in government. Based on the descriptions, decide whether each country is autocratic (A) or democratic (D). Saudi Arabia is ruled by a king. When the king dies, power passes to his son. In Turkey, citizens vote for the president. South Korea s constitution guarantees basic freedoms of the press, speech, and religion. North Korea s citizens have no ability to influence their government. In China, people vote, but the candidates all belong to the Communist Party. South Africa s citizens participate in government by voting, running for office, and expressing their opinions. Decide whether the statement describes a parliamentary or presidential democracy.
