The result is an improved envelope built to a higher construction standard to reduce losses due to infiltration, a high-efficiency variable refrigerant flow system, and reduced energy use for lighting and plug loads. The modeled performance is 70% better than the baseline, and has a HERS index of 38. Heating loads are dramatically reduced over conventional code construction. The primary energy uses in the building is occupant driven loads lighting and plug loads. Relative to the total, seasonal cooling demand is also evident. Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec kwh Generated kwh Demand The chart above shows the annual energy production potential for for the building with a roof top photovoltaic array (left), and a comparison of monthly production and demand (right). The blue area on the pie chart is the annual production relative to the load, which shows the prototype is not net-zero energy annually, but is net positive April through September. Neither the proposed building performance nor the baseline building performance are predictions of actual energy consumption or costs, but provide a relative comparison of the proposed design. The modeling of this prototype was done using IES Virtual Environment REM/Rate was used to generate the HERS Index based on the building on the IES model specifications. The energy production estimate assumes a flat roof with 70% of the tool roof area dedicated to PV panels.
