2 Product development segment Motorcycles and Power Products / Automobile products Motorcycles and power products Keihin is a top manufacturer holding a large global share in the area of carburetors used in motorcycles. With the tightening of emissions regulations, fuel supply systems for automobiles have transitioned from carburetors to fuel injection (FI) systems. In the area of motorcycles as well, we are developing fuel injection systems that can contribute to the global environment (improved fuel economy, supports ethanol fuel). Environment-friendly product development The following three products are supplied as fuel injection systems for small models from both domestic and overseas manufacturers. This includes the Honda Motor Co., Ltd, which is one of major clients. Fuel injection systems Injector (INJ) The fuel injection solenoid valve atomizes fuel within the engine for fuel delivery. Throttle body (THB) Modularized by attaching the sensors, the throttle body regulates the volume of air intake. Fuel pump module (FPM) A fuel pump with low power dissipation that supplies fuel from the tank to the injector. 3 Product development segment Automobile products Automobile products (air conditioning products) By reducing both the size and weight of our HVAC units, we have not only helped improve vehicle fuel economy, but have also helped improve passenger health and in-vehicle comfort. CO2 emission reducing technology for the environment We are working to improve vehicle fuel economy and reduce CO2 discharge by not only reducing weight and size of product components, but also increasing performance and computerizing the system. 4 Product development segment Commitment to Automobile Products and Hybrid Vehicles Automobile products (electronic control units) Electronic control unit: integrated FI / CVT ECU Equipped on the Honda CR-Z (on sale since February 21) First seeing use in the Insight, Honda has expanded application of this ECU to the CR-Z. This ECU uses auto idle stop control to automatically shut the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill to achieve superior fuel performance and exhaust reductions. It is also once again equipped with a coaching / teaching function to give the driver advice on how to drive more fuel efficiently by displaying fuel economy and efficient driving data on the dash gauge cluster. Fuel efficiency comparison with the same type of engine Commitment to hybrid vehicles Currently, the needs surrounding the environmental performance of automobiles continue to rise. With the development of environmental technology as one of our priorities, our company is also advancing technological development of products for hybrid cars. We have been successful in developing such products. We have developed a power drive unit (PDU) that receives signals from the engine control unit to control the motor, as well as battery control products, among others. These products were installed in the Civic Hybrid. We have our electronic control system, fuel delivery system and more equipped on this year s Honda CR-Z hybrid vehicle. For the future, we will continue to pursue the research and development of products for hybrid cars. 5 Environmental conservation results for fiscal 29 Purchasing Segment Keihin has taken advanced initiatives in environment-friendly manufacturing in order to address environmental issues. We are working proactively with suppliers to give them a global perspective on the environment, and we hope to further expand this in the future. 18 Keihi n Environmental Report

6 Purchasing segment Environmental Activities in the Purchasing Segment Environmental management for suppliers We are working to share our understanding of chemical substances, reduction of environmental impacting substances and other environmental efforts with our suppliers. In doing so, we have set standards for controlling chemicals in Keihin products and are preparing briefing sessions on our Green Purchasing Guidelines for suppliers. With awareness of environmental responsiveness for global warming on the rise, we actively worked with our suppliers to obtain ISO141 certification for their environmental management structures. For our non-certified suppliers, we will utilize alternative certification systems in 21, including public certification bodies, and expand our environmental management structure. Status for 29 We ran energy usage surveys of 53 suppliers by means of CO 2 emission surveys. Products that take into account the effect on diverse environments in their respective life cycles will be purchased. Products and services that are manufactured and sold by companies that have a management policy regarding the environment and that are committed to environmental conservation will be purchased. Products are purchased after acquiring and utilizing environmental information about the product itself, as well as about the manufacturing and selling companies. In order that % of our office equipment and supplies is purchased green, we systematized purchasing from eco-friendly product catalogs and have been % green in our purchasing since April 21. We are sharing our goals leading up to adoption of unleaded solder from January 211 with suppliers. So that the effects on the environment are minimized from every aspect, Keihin works towards further environmental improvements, as well as a fusion with our communities. 9 Manufacturing segment Energy Conservation and Conservation of Resources Total CO2 emissions and the basic unit Keihin has set a goal of a 6% reduction of total CO2 emissions by fiscal 21 from the fiscal 2 levels. CO2 emissions for fiscal 29 were down 34% from their fiscal 2 levels. 10 Manufacturing segment Zero Emissions Reduction of waste We have reduced waste disposed by more than 5% compared with 2 volume. Our goal is to send no waste to landfills for final disposal. We have met this goal every year from 21 to present day. Biofuel manufacturers process the oil into biofuel, which is used by company and subsidiary distribution vehicles. 12 Transport segment Commitment to the Environment in the Transport Segment In the transport segment, we are working to reduce environmental impact by reducing shipping supplies and optimizing transport efficiency. To reduce shipping supplies, we are using more returnable cases and review the specifications of our packaging. To optimize transport efficiency, we shortened transporting distances by consolidating our manufacturing plants and worked to increase storage efficiency by overhauling packaging shapes. Basic units of CO2 discharge for transport in fiscal 29 were 2.24 tons per million yen, a 19% reduction from fiscal 28. The method of calculation for CO2 emissions was recalculated with the fuel consumption method. 4 2 Packaging materials reduction Using more returnable external cases We continue to expand use of multiple-use, returnable external cases to replace the one-way cases traditionally sent to locations abroad in transport. We have currently implemented these returnable cases at six sites. By switching from this packing method to putting all the injectors in vacuum-sealed packaging, we can prevent foreign particles without using caps and have reduced our vinyl chloride material usage. Here we report on the environmental load achievements of Kanazu Mfg. Co., Ltd. (motorcycle parts processing and assembly), Keihin Sogyo Co., Ltd. (motorcycle carburetor assembly), Nasu Seiki Mfg. Co., Ltd. (motorcycle and automobile parts processing), Keihin Watari Co., Ltd. (production of functional components for automobiles), and Keihin Valve Corp. (production of industrial valves). Basic unit index was improved by 5% compared to the previous fiscal year by an effect of promotion of energy saving measures. 17 Social activities Activities to Protect the Environment Community environmental conservation activities As part of coexisting with the community, we actively participate in community-organized clean-up activities as a part of our social activities. With a group of 18 people that included Keihin employees and their families, clean-up activities were held in an area surrounding a river. Environmental learning on-demand Continuing from last year, we provided cooperation in environmental education by inviting elementary school students from Kakuda City, Miyagi Prefecture and the surrounding area and introduced them to themes that included How Keihin s products are made and Waste recycling for the environment. We visited schools to teach 95 students in fiscal 29 about the importance of the environment. 18 Social activities Activities to Protect the Environment Environmental Communication In a panel exhibition at the environmental forum sponsored by the city of Kakuda in Miyagi Prefecture, we introduced our activities in energy conservation, waste product recycling and global warming prevention. Presented in an easy-to-understand manner, we were able to show the history of environmental activities. International activities Keihin began its eco cap activities in fiscal 29. We are working together with the region to expand this initiative, making calls to six local elementary schools in fiscal 21 to collaborate our efforts. We collected 11, bottle caps in fiscal 29. This, and a commitment to energy conservation and waste reduction, is not only limited to areas within Japan, but also extends to our production bases all over the world. In fiscal 29, Keihin investigated CO 2 emissions, off-site waste disposal and water resource usage at its affiliated companies around the world, including our own company. 21 Global environmental activities Environmental Activities around the World Environmental activities in China Dongguan Keihin Engine Management System Co., Ltd., one of our group companies, manufactures automotive products in Dongguan, China. They participate in cleaning activities for neighboring regions to raise employee awareness of environmental protection and preserve the regional environment.
