7 Vision & Mission Vision To enhance the impact of PML activities as a world-leading, marine research organization. Mission To undertake cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in the sunlit ocean in anticipation of growing societal needs and to promote stewardship of marine ecosystems.

8 OSR research at PML Oil spill in the Polcevera river near Genoa On Sunday April 17th 2016, large quantities of crude oil were reported in the Polcevera river near the city of Genoa, Italy. The origin of this oil is believed to be a pipeline leak at the local refinery Iplom. The leak had been contained rapidly, but several slicks were reported offshore by local fishermen. A second spill occurred one week later, on Saturday April 23rd, when heavy rain pushed the oil over the floating barriers that were installed in the river to contain the initial leak. A local state of emergency was declared as a large (2km 500 m) slick was observed to slowly travel westward from Genoa, toward France. Spill monitoring : the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), France and the National Research Council (CNR), Italy

9 Oil spill in the Polcevera river near Genoa Semi-coherent slick westward from Genoa. This patch likely comes from the initial spill from pipe leak Many elongated patches are present along the coast. A single slick at the center of a swirl-like structure
