3 1 Background: Japan s previous Implementation of SDGs The Basic Environment Law and Plan Enacted in based on the outcome of the Rio Summit in The 4th Basic Environment Plan(2012); enhances environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainable development in an integrated manner. sets 9 priority areas including domestic and international initiatives. 3

4 2-1 National Implementation Framework SDGs Promotion Headquarters Established in the Cabinet on May 20th Headed by Prime Minster Attended by all Ministers Senior official level steering committee SDGs Implementation Guiding Principles Define Vision, Priority issues, Specific measures, Indicators, Follow-up mechanism etc. Ensure coherence and inclusiveness of various measures by different Ministries. Define roles of stakeholders including private sectors, consumers, academia for SDGs 4

8 Private sector s action for SDGs - Example 1: Itochu (Trading) - Organic Cotton Project (SDGs Goal 1, 3, and 12) Assist cotton farmers to change their farming practice to produce organic cotton in India 1. Provide non-gmo seeds, 2. Dispatch experts on organic agriculture and evaluators for certification, 3. Buy their products with premium prices. Reduce cost, increase yield amount, Education 8

9 Private sector s action for SDGs - Example 2: Sompo Japan (Insurance) - Weather Index Insurance for Southeast Asian farmers (SDGs Goal 2, 13, and 17) Insurance product to reduce agricultural business risk in Southeast Asia. Pay insurance amount when a weather index fulfills certain conditions without certificate of loss Reduce agriculture's risks by climate change, Expand insurance market to farmers 9

14 Sharing with other countries - High Level Seminar on ESC - High Level Seminar on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (ESC) Flagship collaborative initiative by 18 East Asia Summit (EAS) participating countries Annual regional platform to gather a broad range of stakeholders since 2010 Highlight successes of the front runner cities in ASEAN, discuss current issues and explore opportunities for collaboration. ASEAN ESC Model Cities Programme provides seed funds, capacity building and other support to frontrunner cities since Actions: 1) Education, 2) Innovate and Experiment, 3)Networking, 4) Communications 14
