Offaly. Its purpose is to indicate to homeowners, builders, architects, site-assessors and engineers how to construct proper percolation areas. The facility demonstrates various types of percolation systems in a clear and informative manner and is attracting nationwide attention. If you are thinking about upgrading your sewage system or constructing a new one, a visit to this facility will prove invaluable. 3 SEPTIC TANKS Aswasep Septic Tanks Molloy Precast offer a range of EN certi fied septic tanks. Septic tank sizes available are m (,77l), 6m (6,00l) and 7m (7,000l). Both these systems are certi fied with a hydraulic capacity of 99.8% without the aid of any fi lters. This means a unit of pumps is used for aeration, to pump effluent between the chambers and to discharge the clarified water. Advantages of Aswaflow Low running costs - as little as 60 per year No concrete backfilling required Certified technology EN 66- Completely underground In addition to the above, the following also apply for the Klaro Airlift system No need for electrical pumps No mechanical aerator The Aswaflow SBR system is now available with Klaro air lift technology. This technology eliminates the need of electrics in the treatment tank. Bubbles of air are blown into the system s pipework to move water between the two chambers. When the air enters the pipe it naturally moves upwards pushing water ahead of it. This air is produced using an air compressor. A single compressor is used to feed the transfer pipe, sludge return pipe, discharge pipe and the air diffusers. 5 How can Aswaflow save you money? RUNNING COSTS AS LITTLE AS 60 PER YEAR! Aswaflow uses Sequence Batch Reactor technology to treat wastewater to the minimum standards set out by the EPA. An SBR system only uses the minimum amount of energy required to treat the wastewater hence limiting electricity usage. When there is no demand on the system (eg holidays etc) it automatically goes into an eco-mode, only using enough energy to keep the bacteria alive. How SBR tecnology works WASTEWATER TREATMENT The wastewater treatment system is separated into two chambers. Raw sewage enters the first chamber where it is stored while treatment is undergone in the second chamber. The first chamber also prevents any large solids from entering the second chamber. The second chamber treats the wastewater prior to discharge into the percolation system. Fill React Settle Wastewater is transferred from the first chamber into the second chamber via a siphon pipe primed by the sludge pump. An equal amount of wastewater is transferred every time. If the required amount is not available within the first chamber the next phase (React) will not commence until the quantity of wastewater is available. The AswaFlow system uses bacteria already in the chamber to degrade the impurities within sewage. This is achieved by agitating the contents of the tank to mix the sewage with the existing contents of the chamber. Oxygen is added using an aerator to allow this bacteria to thrive and efficiently remove the sewage s impurities. To prevent excessive amounts of sludge building up in the second chamber a small portion of sludge is intermittently pumped back to the first chamber using the sludge pump. The React phase finishes after a set period of time, all equipment is then switched off allowing the sludge and bacteria within the tank to settle out. This produces a clarified volume of water on the top of the chamber. Discharge This phase removes the clarified volume of water. The clarified effluent is pumped to the percolation system using the clear water pump. The volume of water discharged is equal to the volume added in the fill phase and is dictated by a float switch.

Most water softeners are timed and generally use too much salt and waste too much water. 8 GRAVITY PERCOLATION Trench Percolation This is a below-ground percolation system and can be used where there is a minimum distance of 0.9m between the invert of the gravel and the water table or bedrock. Also the receiving soil must have a suitable percolation rate. Off-the-shelf kits Pipes and components designed and prepared to specification This system is illustrated below and consists of the following: 6 7-hole distribution box with weirs for an evenly distributed flow. A distribution system consisting of slit percolation pipes. Distribution pipes embedded in clean stone. Stone protected from overlying soil using a geotextile membrane. Ventilation pipe positioned in discreet location. Stilling pipe, reduces flow rate entering distribution box, ensuring an even distribution into each pipe. Distribution Boxes The Tipper The Tipper is a percolation device designed and developed in conjunction with Trinity College to boost the flow of effluent from the septic tank through the length of the percolation pipe. 8 6

9 PRESSURISED PERCOLATION Pressurised Percolation Off-the-shelf kits Pipes and components designed and prepared to specification This system uses a specifically designed pressurised pipe network to distribute wastewater over the entire percolation area. This system is illustrated below and consists of the following: Inlet pipe, clarified effluent is pumped from the treatment unit to the percolation bed via this pipe. Manifold, a 0mm manifold will distribute the liquid evenly into the percolation system. Advantages of the Pressurised System 6 Distribution pipe, mm pipe system with specifically sized holes at specific spacings, these evenly distribute wastewater under pressure over the percolation system. Distribution pipes embedded in clean stone. Stone protected from overlying soil using a geotextile membrane. Raised sides can be blended into the surroundings. DON T BUY A SEWAGE SYSTEM UNTIL YOU SEE OURS FIRST! Gravity systems rely on the excellent workmanship of building contractors to ensure each pipe is at the appropriate level. Failure to do this often results in a failed percolation system which can cause bleeding through the side of the bed. Even when installed properly the pipes can subside causing the same problems. A pressurised system is more robust and can handle small variations in level. This system is recommended for all percolation areas larger than 90 m. 6 9

With the introduction of water charges and the fact that rainwater is lime-free, now is the time to consider a rainwater harvesting unit. How the Aswarain tank works Rainwater enters the Aswarain system and undergoes the following processes:. Leaf filter removes leaves and solids preventing them from entering the tank.. A calmed inlet which will reduce the risk of disturbing settled solids on the bottom of the tank.. A submersible pump pumps the collected water into the attic header tank.. Excess water is discharged into a soak pit. Filtration, this consists of a course and fine filter which ensures the UV light operates effectively. C. Carbon block, this removes unwanted odours which may occur. D.
