3 The Dutch-Arctic Connection Willem Barentsz - Dutch Navigator, Cartographer and Arctic Explorer Three expeditions to the far north in search of the northeast passage. Discovered Bear Island and Spitsbergen, explored and stranded on Novaya Zemlya. In 1853, the former Murmean Sea was renamed Barents Sea in his honour. 3

4 Location of this platform? The "Zuidwal Platform" (PE ZW PA) is located between the head of the Afsluitdijk at the Friesland side and the Wadden island Vlieland. The platform is operated by Total and produces gas from a Jurassic reservoir at a depth of 1900 m. The platform is supported by 8 legs and is protected from drifting ice by 16 tubular piles. So occassionally, the Dutch Wadden Sea is a Sub-Arctic area! Zuidwal Platform 4

5 Arctic History of During the so-called Little Ice Age, between 1784 and 1861, about 140 river dikes in failed due to excessive ice loads and increased water levels due to ice dams. This was 57% of all dike failures in the Netherlands during that time! 10 City of Delft Blue Pottery Between 1600 and 1800, Delft was one of the foremost pottery producers in Europe as Delft Blue pottery was immensely popular. Only De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, known as Royal Dutch, has remained in operation since 1653 and still produces the Delft Blue pottery according to the traditional methods. Other locations in Delft where one can see the pottery are De Delftse Pauw and in the many souvenir shops around town. 10

11 Delft & the Royal House of Orange The New Church contains the crypt where the members of the Dutch royal family, the house of Orange, have their final resting-place. 11

13 Summary and Practical Issues Location: Aula Congresscentre, Delft University of Technology, NL Date: Sunday 16 June 2019 to Thursday 20 June 2019 Travel: From the international airport Schiphol, there is easy access to Delft by train. The conference location is easily reachable from Delft Centre by walking (10 mins) or public transport (bus). Travel Restrictions: In many cases no Visa required; in some cases however a Visa may be required depending on origin. Accommodation: Abundantly available in the historic centre of Delft. 14 Summary and Practical Issues Weather: In June, generally its around 18 C - 24 C, there is lots of sun but also regular rains! Social Program: A Delft Canal Cruise (a boat trip through the historic centre of Delft) will be included in the conference fee; otherwise and the Netherlands in general, is very tourist-friendly. Accompanying persons: The options for people accompanying participants to the conference are abundantly available, for example: Exploring Delft by a guided historic Delft City Tour. One can visit the Highlights of Delft such as the Old & New Churches, Royal Dutch (Porceleyne Fles), Prinsenhof, go shopping at the many (gift) shops or enjoy food and drinks at the many restaurants and terraces in the city. Other Dutch cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague are close by and can be reached by train within an hour. 14
