1 1 I Get Mad A short easy booklet on climate change I get mad when politicians lie so they can steal money from hard working people. Certain politicians are trying to pass laws that every time we turn on a light, drive a car or purchase almost anything we will have to pay a hidden tax. It is called cap and trade, but it is a fee paid by anyone who lives. For example when something is delivered to a store, the delivery truck buys gas that is taxed and the store passes the extra cost along in the form of higher prices. I wouldn t be so angry if that tax actually did some good. But the only good it will do is fatten some politicians pockets. People like Al Gore have set up companies that will collect these fees and of course keep a portion for them selves. This is just wrong. People love disaster scenarios such as the end of the earth, invasions from outer space, enormous meteors striking earth and so forth. There is something really scary when we are faced with dire predictions about future cataclysmic events and our deaths. Thousands of movies and books are made with these themes. Global warming fits right in with these disaster thrillers. Fortunately, like the movies they are just made up stories created to make money. In the 1970's people feared the coming climate change believing that a new ice age was starting and that we needed to prevent crushing of our New York skyscrapers by the new glaciers. The government paid scientists millions to find a way to fight the coming ice age. Their solution was to send planes to cover the polar ice with soot in order to increase solar heat absorbed by the ice. Strangely today, some people have a great cataclysmic fear of global warming. I was a design engineer on the Apollo moon rocket that successfully put a man on the moon. I understand how science works. However most people do not have a scientific background and when told of an approaching world disaster they naturally say fix it at any cost. The majority of meteorologists and scientists who take no government money do not believe in man caused global warming. Physicist Hal Lewis, said it best: "Global warming is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life." There are a number of reasons why these scientists and meteorologists do not believe in man made global warming: 1. The fact of the matter is that for millions of years Earth has been repeatedly cooling or warming. In its extremes it changes between ice ages and warm tropical weather. 2. Earth s heat comes from the sun and there are continual changes in the amount or energy the sun sends to Earth. 3. The main greenhouse gas is water vapor. In comparison to water vapor, carbon dioxide s greenhouse contribution is insignificant. 4. We know that human contribution to the total carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is very small. 5. Cap and trade will not change the climate but it will make certain politicians and their friends very rich. It will also ruin our economy by raising prices on almost everything we buy or use. 6. The climate gate scandal proved that many government paid scientists manipulated data to make things seem worse than they really are. 7. Global warming is generally good and will prevent famine and allow more food to grow which is necessary to feed the growing numbers of people who live on earth. The following pages give much more detail on each of these subjects. Copyright 2011 by Alan Fensin, all rights reserved. 2 2 Chicken Little Chicken Little says the sky is warming and warns of Earth s disastrous change. This time he is half right. The sky, and the Earth have always been either cooling or warming. So we can safely say that climate change is real. In fact for the last million years there has been ten Glacial (ice ages) and ten warming periods. However, in addition to the major glacial and melt off cycles, each of the warming period also contains a lot of back-and-forth temperature changes. For example, not that long ago, the New York Times and most other papers were warning readers of the approaching doom with the coming new ice age years ago, (during the Holocene Maximum period) temperatures were hotter than they are today, and the Sahara Desert was wet enough to support lush vegetation and swamps. This was followed by the Little Ice Age, which lasted from about 1500 to Climate change history is an essential foundation for understanding the wide swings of Earth s temperature. 20,000 years ago most of North America was covered by a one-mile thick blanket of ice and the ocean level was an astonishing 400 feet lower that it is today. Starting about 12,000 years ago, Earth began warming, the ice started melting and the oceans started rising. A typical warming period will last about 12,000 years, however the cycles vary a lot. The warming period we are in now could last for thousands more years or end tomorrow. We know that all this climate change is normal climatic variations, and is caused by Mother Nature and not by Man. Our doom and gloom news media may scare us with talk about record heat or record cold days. But these so called records are only for the last few hundred years, or less, and have nothing to do with the multi-billion year records of earth. Temperature Change (degtee C) Ice ages are shown in these 450,000 years of the EPICA ice cores samples in Antarctica. Our current interglacial period is not yet as hot as previous interglacial cycles. The Sun Causes Climate Change Mother nature has created continuous climate change since earth was created more than 4.5 billion years ago. Our Earth has always experienced climate change and will forever experience it. Some of this is due to the fact that the Sun is getting hotter. Since the earth was created the sun has gotten about 30% hotter and this will continue. Additionally we can observe various cyclic changes within the Sun itself, such as Sun spots and solar wind plasma, which affect the energy output of the Sun. Longer term complex and less understood, but much more powerful changes also occur. Variations in solar energy could also result from anything that would change the amount of energy Earth receives from the Sun. We have observed thousands of stars (suns) in the sky that

3 3 exhibit variable brightness and if our sun does, this could cause climate change. During volcanic eruptions, tremendous amounts of particles and gases are spewed into the atmosphere where they reflect incoming solar radiation and thus reduce atmospheric temperatures. Some sulfur gases remains in the atmosphere for years lowering Earth s temperature. Meteor strikes can also produce solid particles held in suspension in the atmosphere, effect the radiative balance, and influence climate. Earth travels through space at about two million miles per hour and passes through clouds of interstellar dust and gas concentrations changing the solar radiation reaching Earth. There is even a theory that the elusive dark matter that is abundant throughout our galaxy can vary the Sun s energy received on earth. Other factors include irregularities in Earth s axial wobble, orbit variations, the orientation of the earth, and the distance of earth to the Sun. For example we know that Earth s orbit around the sun varies from nearly a circle to an ellipse and back again about every 100,000 years. This moves us closer or further from the Sun changing the heat Earth receives. All these effects dwarf any man made contributions and make them insignificant. Changes in different radiation frequencies can also cause temperature change. Recently we discovered that changes in the Sun s ultra violet light effects cloud formations. Clouds make a substantial difference in the heat that gets through to earth. Our Sun provides the heat and light that make life on Earth possible. Yet Earth receives less than a billionth of the energy that leaves the Sun. So you can see that slight changes could cause Earth to get much hotter or colder. So when the politicians tell you that man causes global climate change, tell them no, physical science say that it is really Mother Nature. Tell them that the energy from the sun goes through cycles and there is nothing we can do about it. Greenhouse Gas A greenhouse has a glass or clear plastic roof and sides that lets sunlight in to heat the house. The hot inside air is contained and blocked from mixing with the colder outside air. A greenhouse gas absorbs and re-radiates the reflective heat from Earth. It is not a real greenhouse because hot air rises and mixes with the colder air at higher elevations. Still there is some increased warming at the earth s surface. Water vapor is by far the most abundant greenhouse gas. On average our atmosphere contains about 2 percent water vapor. The other greenhouse gases are all very small trace gases. For example, carbon dioxide accounts for somewhat less than 0.04 percent of earth s atmosphere. Many sources such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires, normal plant decay, etc. all produce huge amounts of natural carbon dioxide that dwarf Man s contribution. From the chart below you can see that human carbon dioxide contribution to the greenhouse effect is far below one percent (0.14%) and is therefore insignificant. Based on concentrations adjusted for green house characteristics * % of all greenhouse gases % Man-made contribution Water vapor % 0.04% ** Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 3.62% 0.14% Methane (CH4) 0.36% 0.07% Nitrous Oxide (N2O) 0.95% 0.05% Misc. gases 0.07% 0.04% Total % 0.34% * The thermal absorbtivity for a molecule of water vapor is about twice that of carbon dioxide molecule. ** Man increases water vapor by farm irrigation, lawn sprinklers, dams, etc.

4 Interestingly, many "facts and figures regarding global warming completely ignore the powerful effects of water vapor in the greenhouse system, deliberately overstating human impacts by an astounding 2,000%. Still there is only one thing we hear over and over and it is the greenhouse effect supposedly caused by carbon dioxide. But water vapor is the elephant in the room and easily exposes that fiction. This huge elephant is the reason that the Al Gore types excluded water vapor in their green house calculations. Carbon Dioxide is Good Carbon dioxide is our friend. Carbon dioxide is not a poison or a bad gas. We all make it in our bodies and release it every time we exhale. Politicians hope that we will confuse it with carbon monoxide. This is a component of auto exhaust and can kill by combining with our red blood cells. However carbon dioxide is a completely different chemical from carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant or smog. (Pollutant components include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, ozone, carbon monoxide, but not carbon dioxide.) We use carbon dioxide in many ways, and it is even added to our soft drinks to make them bubble. If it were a poison we wouldn t add it to our drinks. Even dry ice, used to cool our foods, is almost pure carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a plant food and is necessary for green plant growth. Some politicians say we need to reduce carbon dioxide by 50% to save the earth. In fact if levels decrease below 50% of today s levels, photosynthesis will stop, all green plants will turn brown and die causing widespread famine and death. Even at 70% of current carbon dioxide levels, a slow-down in plant growth is significantly noticeable. Plants actually do much better with more, and not less carbon dioxide in the air. By adding about 60% more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere inside a greenhouse, growers have been able to get a 40% crop increase in food growth and plant size. Some studies show that the optimal level for many green plants is about 300% greater than found in air. Carbon dioxide does not stay in the atmospheres forever. Mother Earth is constantly scrubbing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere in various ways. Green plants remove carbon dioxide and use it to grow. Dissolved carbon dioxide in rainwater reacts with limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) to form soluble calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2). This soluble compound is then washed away with the rainwater. This form of weathering is called carbonation and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. The more carbon dioxide in the air the faster and bigger the trees will grow and the more weathering will occur. This helps to balance the total carbon dioxide levels. Cap and Trade Real science is in agreement that global warming is caused mostly by the sun. Water vapor and to a much lesser extent carbon dioxide play a very minor role. Only political science still claims that man made carbon dioxide is the determinant factor. So what is this Cap and Trade that the politicians are trying to put into law? It is really a tax on everyone that ends up in the pockets of politicians as bribes, pork barrel and just plain corruption. Carbon dioxide accounts for only 4% of total greenhouse warming, and 95% of that has nothing to do with humans and comes from natural sources such as volcanoes. So the human contribution is insignificant. Cap and Trade won t do anything to improve the environment. It is just another corrupt grab by the greedy people for power and money at the expense of ordinary people. Green energy jobs, like Solyndra, are another avenue for corruption. Cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to dishonest politicians. Al Gore promotes the carbon dioxide hoax, and he has companies and friends who would sell the carbon credits and pocket much of it themselves. If he really believed his story, he wouldn t be flying around in his private jet to his various huge homes all of which produce copious quantities of carbon dioxide. 4

5 Scientists who forget that only the political side of this issue should be heard quickly learn their mistake. If they want to publish a paper or present the facts clearly, they are muzzled with threats of loss of government or university money or even ridicule and loss of job. Climate gate Climate gate is the revelation that an Intergovernmental Panel of scientists falsified much of climate data to convince the public of a need for cap and trade. They attempted to stand climate history on its head by showing that, after many years of decline, global temperatures have recently shot up to their highest level in recent history. But soon thousands of their leaked s were released showing their dishonesty. One example of their tainted manipulated science is the so-called hock puck chart made from manipulated data. This fake evidence was supposed to prove the completely spurious conclusion of man made global warming and that the earth is suddenly heating up and is doomed. In fact it was the dishonest science that was doomed. All they proved is that political science is more important to them than real science. Since climate gate revealed that climate research data was a political lie, it has become clear that America needs to regain energy security by drilling for gas and oil anywhere it is found. This will create jobs and boost our competitiveness. It will also stop sending trillions of dollars to Arab countries that support terrorism. Another example of their dishonesty is the false statement that ice-core records taken in Greenland and Antarctica show that carbon dioxide causes global warming. However it was later shown that the warming actually caused the increased carbon dioxide. Our oceans are an enormous depository of carbon dioxide. Cold oceans, like cold carbonated soft drinks, easily store carbon dioxide. But a soft drink that warms up quickly releases its carbon dioxide. As the oceans heat up they also release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So warm temperatures cause an increased carbon dioxide and it is not the carbon dioxide that causes the warm temperatures. Politicians don t talk about ice-core samples much any more. Because the phrase global warming is now ridiculed so frequently, it was changed and the new buzz-words are climate change. Since everything in nature has always been changing, no one can say it is not true. It s when they try to say that man and not nature is causing the change that they come back to their same old science fiction. The vast majority of American top scientists believe man-made carbon dioxide is not a significant factor in climate change and 31,478 brave scientists signed a petition to this effect. Still, ignoring the facts of real science, political junk science says it is a problem. Through their scare tactics they hope to transfer many billions of dollars from the average hardworking American and give it to their corrupt political friends such as Al Gore. It s called cap and trade, and is really a tax on electricity, heat, manufacturing and transportation fuel that will be passed along to average Americans as higher prices on almost everything. The way it works, every business and ultimately every person will be taxed on their carbon footprint and the money and credits will be given to Al Gore type groups who will no doubt keep much of it. This is wrong, and would be the largest tax increase in American history putting money in the pockets of Al Gore and the politically connected. Since most people no longer believe in man made global warming, legislation on carbon dioxide will be wrapped up in the language of energy security, job-creation and boosting American competitiveness, rather than by talking about the climate changing, about which voters appear relatively unconcerned. Of course the real results would be job destruction, more dependence on the terrorist countries and a less competitive America. Contrary to propaganda, oil is a renewable resource. Mother Nature continuously makes coal and oil from organic sources such as dead trees. But much oil also comes from inorganic gas. Methane (CH4) is a common gas found in huge quantities throughout our solar system and at great depths in the Earth. At the mantle-crust interface rising streams of compressed methane gas hits pockets of high temperature causing the condensation of heavier hydrocarbons such as oil. 5
