11 Superior transmission In India, we carried out the largest-ever national energy transmission project: a Siemens high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line connects the generator stations near Talcher in Orissa state with the distant industrial region of Bangalore in the state of Karnataka more than 1,400 kilometers away. The line carries 2,000 MW at a voltage of 500 kv. Better quality of supply In Libya, Siemens systems and components are helping to optimize the quality of supply of the national power grid in the Tobruk, Bengasi, Tripoli, Zawia and Sheba and five further areas. The state utility GECOL installed in total ten control center with the state-of-the-art SINAUT spectrum operating and monitoring system, one of Siemens newest developments. Green power for Australia: Basslink We built the substations on both ends of the 400 kv HVDC subsea interconnector that runs through the Bass Strait to connect Tasmania and the Australian province of Victoria. Now up to 500 MW of green power generated on Tasmania from renewable sources can be made available to consumers on the Australian mainland. At the same time, the base load in Tasmania can also be covered using power brought over from the mainland. Optimal use of wind power In East Lincolnshire, England, we connected two offshore wind parks with the national British electrical grid. The two wind parks can produce a total of 180 MW of electrical power. The turnkey project included the system design, an submarine 33 kv cable network, and several medium voltage switching stations. Better protection for Italy s power grid We developed and installed an integrated system to automate switching stations for the operators of Italy s most important transmission network. The system includes protective functions, field control stations, monitoring systems, and global automation of switchgears, including the operating and remote control interfaces. Communications in the SICAM PAS system comply with the new international standard IEC Energy for São Paulo To improve service to southeastern São Paulo, we worked with the Alusa Group of Brazil to design and install a new, top-of-the-line switchgear for Anhanguera as well as upgrading and modernizing an existing switchgear. We then connected the two via a new high-voltage line. The roughly 40 switchgear bays use gas-insulated and air-insulated switchgears. Special transformers to deal with solar winds In South Africa, our special transformers are helping modernize several coal-fired and hydroelectric plants. The transformers were developed and equipped especially for the stronger solar winds experienced in South Africa: solar winds induce direct currents of 10 to 100 amperes in high-voltage lines. Without special equipment, the resulting magnetic saturation in the transformer coils could increase the load and ultimately cause the transformer to fail. Top voltage level modernized In Russia, we install a powerful instrumentation and control system for the highest national voltage level. The new system also meets the conditions for the deregulated Russian energy market. It consists of a central control center in Moscow and seven multi-regional centers distributed across the entire country. 500 kv HVDC for the USA In the United States, we installed an HVDC transmission line between Sayreville, New Jersey, and Long Island, New York. It can transmit up to 750 MW of electricity to the island and helps the local utility cover the growing demand for power on Long Island. In addition to the construction and erection of the line, we also assisted our customers during the approvals process. Qatar: Build, upgrade, optimize For Kahramaa, we produced and installed 25 new switchgears in Qatar as a turnkey project, making a great contribution to expanding the national energy grid. We also upgraded another 14 existing switchgears. Another ten systems were modified and optimized as well.
