2 Co-generation plant PG 50 PEZZOLATO to 50 kw The proposed complete turnkey co-generation plant is made of a storage, drying and sieving chips system and of a gasification unit converting biomass into electricity and heat. Storage system and wood chips selection with sieving Co-generator Spanner RE2 Gasification unit Spanner RE2 Why a chipped wood gasifer RENEWABLE ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES Gasification is a process of great interest, because plants are fed by wooden biomass, a renewable source widely available all over the Italian territory, assuring the high production performance of 1KWel and 2 kwth from 1 kg of wood. ENERGY BILL The sales price paid by the GSE, according to the Decree dated July 6th, 2012, implementing the Decree N. 28 dated March 3rd, 2011, is between 257 and 327 per electric MWh produced and supplied into the network. COGENERATION PRODUCES ELECTRICITY AND HEAT SIMULTANEOUSLY Besides the interesting income, the simultaneous availability of thermal energy is a plus not to underestimate. This energy can be profitably used to heat firm premises and a series of different private housings. The heat commercial value, based on the price of the natural gas, is 100 per MWh heat. That is to say that in a gasification plant, producing 50 electric kws, for example, there are up to 100 kws nof thermal power available, enough to supply an area of 1000 square meters. NEW EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES Wood chips intended as a fuel, oblige to shorten the wood supply chain as much as possible, create new possible employments linked to yarding, chipping and, in general, supplying of raw material. 2

3 Why a turnkey plant by Pezzolato Air introduction into the drying area KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITIES Our long experience in the treatment of woody biomass in addition to the constant investment in research and development have led Pezzolato to offer a form of gasification which includes all the auxiliary services necessary for its operation, and to develop a system of fuel pre-treatment essential for the continuous and reliable system performance. EXPANDABLE SOLUTIONS Pezzolato Energy provides standard containerized solutions from an installed capacity of 50 kwel. All systems are designed to easily increase power in a second time. 4 EPG Drying and sieving wood chips system Technological research by Team Pezzolato led to the creation of a new storage, drying and chips sieving system, suitable for the feeding of: Gasification units, converting biomass into electricity and heat; Heat energy equipments (chips heater); Pellet equipments. This system is essential for the continual and reliable operation of the co-generation plant. The EPG series module is extremely compact and modulable; its dimensions are so small that the module may be containerized and placed outside farms or industrial buildings. The wood chips are loaded from the top into a storage silos whose dimensions vary according to the customer s needs. The desired chips quantity to be treated is pulled out from the tank and carried to the drying area by means of a regulator roller. The drying process is achieved by using the hot air produced from the heat exchange between the external air introduced by a ventilator and the hot water coming from the co-generation motor. The required chips humidity level is stated by a software device installed on machine board. This allows employing the less heat energy possible during all drying process. The dried chips are then transferred by a collecting Archimedes screw to the sieve for the separation from dusts and fine particles. The right-size dried chips are finally conveyed by means of an Archimedes screw system into the tank for the feeding of the co-generation unit. Furthermore, the output of the sieving is perfectly suitable for pellet production or for the feeding of chips heaters for domestic use. 5 PG Co-generation plant The gasification unit employed has a charging system which presents two shutter opening alternatively. This method avoids the unintentional air flowing into the gasifier. The gasifier employed is the one currently defined Co-current fixed bed gasifier. This type of gasifier consists of a closed tank; the chipped material is charged from the top. The syngas (produced gas) and the produced ashes leave from the reactor s bottom. In such a system the material moves downwards, due to the gravity force. During the descent, the following reactions take place: DRYING PROCESS In the drying area, the water remaining in the chipped material evaporates. This step of the process takes place in air absence and needs heat energy. Temperature is inferior to 200 C. THE PYROLYSIS (OR DEVOLATILIZATION) PROCESS In this area, the wood separates at a temperature between 200 and 600 C by producing charcoal and a gas mixture which includes also a great part of tar. Also this step of the process takes place in air absence and needs heat energy. OXIDATION In their descent inside the gasifier, pyrolysis products enter into a narrowing where a controlled amount of air is injected. In this area, the tar and a part of the charcoal are burned at a temperatures over 1000 C. This reaction provides the heat necessary for the reactions in the remaining area of the gasifier. This type of gasifier ensures an extremely low tar content in the syngas, in fact the tar generated in the pyrolysis is decomposed almost completely when passing the narrow and high temperature oxidation zone. REDUCTION In this area the charcoal, supported by a grid, reacts with the gas resulting from the oxidation zone that maintains temperatures over 700 C. The reactions that occur in this area allow to obtain a further portion of combustible gases (mainly CO and H2), transforming the water vapour coming from drying and oxidation, the carbon dioxide generated in the oxidation zone and the charcoal. After emerging from the gasifier, the flow of gas and ash is cooled to about 130 C through a series of heat exchangers. The recovered heat is used in part to heat the air used for the oxidation. The remaining part heats a flow of hot water which is supplied from the equipment, as cogenerated heat. The gas flow then passes through a dry filter in which the ash is separated from the syngas. The filter is equipped with an automatic extraction auger, which carries the ashes in to a closed tank. The clean syngas is then burned in an Otto cycle engine to produce electricity. The engine cooling is done thanks to a water-water exchanger, thereby further contributing to the production of hot water.
