16 Your Mogden update. Helping to control mosquitoes in your area. We follow a strict year-round programme to control the growth of the mosquito population at Mogden Sewage Treatment Works. The London Boroughs of Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames are also working hard to keep the mosquitoes outside of the site under control. Did you know, hundreds of mosquito eggs can grow in as little as a standing cup of water? Here are some tips you can follow at home to stop that happening. Keep gutters and flat roofs clear. Dead leaves can trap water, where mosquitos can breed. Get rid of litter and used tyres. They collect water very quickly and become a good breeding site. Change bird bath water once a week. It ll remove any mosquito larvae before they become adults. Check the lid on your rain water butt. If it s not properly sealed, mosquitoes can get in and breed. Arrange tarpaulin so water can run off. It collects especially quickly on garden furniture covers. Turn over containers you aren t using. Wheelbarrows, buckets, dustbin lids, etc. can hold a lot of water. Keep fish in your garden pond. Many species will eat mosquito larvae living in the water. Using insect repellent The chemicals in the many available insect repellants (including natural insect repellants) also work to repel mosquitos. Always use them according to the manufacturer s instructions, especially when used near small children. Using insect repellent? Contact your local authority if you find mosquitoes or if you re worried about being bitten. They ll investigate and provide you with advice. 18 Mogden Community Visits. London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Friends Of the River Crane Environment Thanks for organising a fascinating and informative tour of Mogden yesterday. I never thought I'd get the opportunity to visit this key part of London's infrastructure. Thank you so much for a fascinating tour of Mogden yesterday. It was so well organised and we felt privileged to see behind the scenes of something one takes for granted

19 Mogden Community Engagement. FORCE support and partnership Funding for community learning programme Enhancing the Mogden stretch of the Duke of Northumberland s River ZSL Eel monitoring Monitoring starts again next week If you know anyone who might be interested in helping with the twice weekly surveys, we are recruiting new volunteers.

20 Site biodiversity enhancements Swift boxes We are working with the RSPB and Swift Conservation to install nestboxes on Mogden s admin building tower to help declining swifts. Fish pass We are also working with the South East Rivers Trust, Crane Valley Partnership, Environment Agency to adapt the weir on the Duke of Northumberland s River to enable more fish species to pass this barrier. This would also provide a secondary route to the Crane from the Thames which could help fish move upstream during low flow conditions and/or pollution incidinets.
