Energy critical infrastructure monitoring WHY DOES SPACE DATA MATTER? An overview of localised conditions and changes throughout vast land areas or cities over time is vital in the continuous maintenance and operation of these services. This is only possible as a result of satellite technology. European Space Agency

Pylon movements and ground displacement GridWatch: project example Distribution tower collapsed because of the wind Credit: GridWatch IAP project European Space Agency

Pylon movements and ground displacement GridWatch: project example SAR images are used for the detection of small and slow movements of pylons and ground Credit: GridWatch IAP project Displacement map using satellite SAR data European Space Agency

Vegetation monitoring WHY DOES SPACE DATA MATTER? Earth Observation optical and Earth Observation SAR data provide information on: tree species & height estimation, determination of the position of trees with respect to power lines. By knowing the tree specie and environmental condition (including weather), a prediction of vegetation growth can be modelled. European Space Agency

Vegetation Monitoring Point 4 project example The project intends to provide a real-time auditing service, checking on the spot of trees have been pruned to specification prior to moving to the next one. Space assets allow to: Satellite telecommunications: communication from those places without other terrestrial means. EO data: vegetation status / evolution to assess the risk European Space Agency

Point 4 project European Space Agency

Assets maintenance and recovery Sharper Shape project example Objective: improve maintenance and recovery of their overhead assets and reducing related operational costs. rapid recognition of damages after storm clearance need detection and prioritization of areas supervision of vegetation clearance cost efficiency of new methods Credits: Sharper-Sat ESA IAP feasibility study European Space Agency

Assets maintenance and recovery Sharper Shape project example Sharper Shape uses EO supported by airborne data gathered by RPAS and its own software solutions which provide a new level of accuracy and faster time-to-results. RPAS and SatEOfor maintenance and recovery of electricity grid Sharper Shape uses EO data to detect vegetation change near power lines. Use of EO change detection: Identification of clear cuts near power line corridors Vegetation clearance supervision (VHR) Trigger UAV inspection Credits: Sharper-Sat ESA IAP feasibility study European Space Agency

Assets maintenance and recovery Sharper Shape project example Sharper Shape UAV s are capable Beyond Visual Line Of Sight fights with up to 1 hour flight time and up to 8 kg payload. Sharper Shapes UAV s are equipped with high performance LiDAR, High resolution cameras, onboard computer and storage unit and high precision IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) Credits: Sharper-Sat ESA IAP feasibility study European Space Agency

RENEWABLE ENERGY WHY DOES SPACE DATA MATTER? The weather plays a huge role in the level of energy produced from renewable sources. This is where Earth orbiting satellite data can be utilised for maximum effect. Highly accurate weather forecasting will help solar, wind and hydro energy output predictions. European Space Agency

Wind / wave forecasting for offshore wind farms ISSWIND project example Wind resource maps: estimate wind farm potential revenues (bankability) Wind and wave hindcast databases (for site selection) Short term weather and wave forecasts in support to wind farm maintenance and operations Wind Power production forecast EO provides weather observation services (e.g.: EUMETSAT products) GNSS near real time observations to extract atmospheric parameters (e.g. stratified relative humidity) to improve weather forecasting models Credits: ISSWIND ESA IAP project European Space Agency

Water flow monitoring and prediction service INTOGENER project example Develop an advanced water flow monitoring and prediction service, mainly aimed at hydro power production companies (Water and Energy management authorities as secondary market). The service is based on Satellitebased EO data, and in-situ data from GNSS-R (Refloected GNSS signals) and other conventional instrumentation transferred via satellite communicationsto the processing centre. A hydrological model assimilates all the data for the proper water flow forecast. Credits: INTOGENER ESA IAP project European Space Agency

DISTRIBUTED ENERGY NETWORKS PLANNED ESA S FUNDED INVITATION TO TENDER European Space Agency

esa business applications SPACE-BASED SERVICES FOR DISTRIBUTED ENERGY NETWORKS Objectives Assess technical feasibility and economic viability of space based applications for SmartGrid and grid supporting services. Get anchor customers commitment towards services implementation and sustainable operation. Define a roadmap for services implementation and demonstration (potentially through a follow-up ESA co- funded project). ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 15/05/2018 Slide 20 European Space Agency

esa business applications EXAMPLES OF STUDY APPLICATION AREAS: SMARTGRID Automatic load balancing/self-healing of the electricity grid. Virtual Power Plants. Demand Response (DR). Smart meter enabled services: home automation / AMI. Predictive outage and maintenance. Integration of Electric Vehicle (EV) fleet into the energy system. Distributed energy storage (DES) systems. Predict and optimize load dispatch Household storage units reliability Non-technical energy losses Utilities market strategy (electricity prices, profitability, low rates vs extra services, etc.) ESA Etc. UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use ESA 06/06/2018 Slide 21 European Space Agency

ESA Downstream Business Applications Energy to boost socio-economic development Integrated applications for microgrids in developing economies

Background Global access to electricity still far from achieved 1.2 billion have no access to electricity o 95% in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia o 80% in rural areas An additional 1 billion people lack access to reliable electricity supply Microgrids offer an attractive solution to achieve energy access in rural and developing areas Challenges remain that are restraining microgrid development - Data acquisition/monitoring - Lack of accurate energy forecasts hinders financial analysis and investment Duration: 9 months Selection process on going VivekM. / Greenpeace

Feasibility study overview Objectives Assess if and how space technology can support the setting-up and operation of microgrids in developing countries Assess the technical and commercial viability of proposed services Propose roadmap for service implementation and demonstration Targeted Application domains Assessment of energy demand and potential energy supply Remote monitoring and maintenance (including disaster recovery) Spin-off services to boost socio-economic growth Supported by Indian Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) who will liaise with Indian governmental and private stakeholders, to collect their requirements, and help define the potential follow-up demonstration project.

Space tech and services potential contribution Earth observation: socio-economic information energy load forecasting and planning, environmental information / landscape and land use to optimisethe selection of microgridsites and assessment of their power potential. Satellite Communication (SatCom): to provide seamlessly connectivity to (typically) remote microgridsites (monitoring and maintenance). Enabler of spin-off services (e.g.: tele-education)
