First Grade Essential Standards Grade One I CAN Statements and Essential Science Vocabulary 1.P Explain the importance of a push or pull to change the motion of an object. Push Pull Motion Change I can tell what happens when an object is pushed. I can tell what happens when an object is pulled. 1.P Explain how some forces (pushes and pulls) can be used to make things move without touching them, such as magnets. Force Magnet Touch Poles (North/ South) I can push an object with a magnet. I can pull an object with a magnet. I can predict which objects will be attracted to a magnet. I can make an object move without touching it. 1.P Predict the effect of a given force on the motion of an object, including balanced forces. Balance Counter-weight Unstable Stable Fulcrum I can show how to use counter-weights to balance an object.

I can predict if an object will be stable when balanced on a fulcrum. 1.E Recognize differences in the features of the day and night sky and apparent movement of objects across the sky as observed from Earth. Sun Star Planets Moon Shadows Rotation Earth Constellations Horizon I can observe that my shadow changes size and shape during the day. I can show how the earth moves around the sun. I can identify features of the night/day sky. 1.E Recognize the patterns of observable changes in the Moon s appearance from day to day. Shapes Waxing Waning Full New Gibbous Quarter Crescent Phases I can observe the moon and make a moon chart. I can predict the changes in the moon. 1.E Summarize the physical properties of Earth materials, including rocks, minerals, soils, and water, that make them useful in different ways. >>>>???color, hardness, shape, size>>>>>?????

Color Hardness Shape Size Magnifier Properties Silt Pebbles Sand Rocks Minerals Screen Texture Appearance I can sort rocks by their properties. I can predict what will happen when soil falls through water. I can predict what size screen to use to separate rock materials. 1.E Compare the properties of soil samples from different places relating their capacity to retain water, nourish and support the growth of certain plants. Retain Nourish Moisture I can tell how soil samples are the same and different. I can predict which soil will grow plants. 1.L Recognize that plants and animals need air, water, light (plants only) space, food and shelter and that these may be found in their environment. Environment Air Light Space Food Shelter Survival

I can identify the basic needs of plants. I can identify the basic needs of animals. I can identify environmental resources. 1.L.1.2- Give examples of how the needs of different plants and animals can be met by their environments in NC or different places throughout the world. Predator Prey Ecosystem I can match the animal/ plant to the correct ecosystem. I can name two examples of how different plants/animals needs are met in their environment. 1.L.1.3- Summarize ways that humans protect their environment and/or improve conditions for the growth of the plants and animals that live there (e.g., reuse or recycle products to avoid littering). Natural Resources Reduce Recycle Litter Waste Plastic Reuse Paper Metal Glass Compost I can name natural resources. I can identify items that are recyclable.

I can identify items that can be reused. I can identify ways to reduce waste. 1.L.2.1 Summarize the basic needs of a variety of different plants (including air, water, nutrients, and light) for energy and growth. Air Nutrients Light Life Cycle Seeds Pollination Energy Growth Space Producers Consumers I can name the basic needs of a plant for energy. I can name the basic needs of a plant for growth. I can sort plants into producers and consumers. 1.L.2.2 Summarize the basic needs of a variety of different animals (including air, water, and food) for energy and growth. Air Nutrients Light Life Cycle Space Food Chain/Web Carnivores Herbivores Omnivores I can name the basic needs of an animal for energy. I can name the basic needs of an animal for growth. I can sort animals into groups of carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
