1 MICHAEL S. ROY Michael received his PhD in genetics in 1992 and went on to become an academic in the field of natural resources conservation, serving in several universities worldwide. Michael has developed sustainability projects for international agencies, non profits and corporations to develop natural resource conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, impact and training projects at a landscape level. Michael has many years of experience of accounting for carbon through forestry/orchard/natural forest projects (both sequestration and sequestered) and has worked with corporate carbon accounting for over 5 years being an early adopter of the GHG protocol. Michael has developed customized sustainability and carbon calculators and advised on the development of sector specific calculators (e.g. Cool Farm Tool for Agriculture) and lectured on the subject of carbon emissions and accounting. In 2010 Michael co-founded the consultancy Common Fields to work specifically on sustainability issues within the agricultural supply chain; in 2012, Milepost and Common Fields merged to become one company. Michael has a core expertise in environmental impact mitigation, corporate sustainability strategy, carbon emissions and sequestration accounting and reporting, water use efficiency and discharge, and energy efficiency. SAMPLE EXPERIENCE Lead Researcher Frankfurt School of Finance and Management Developed a report of climate change effects and climate adaptation strategies for Andean agriculture. The project involved researching up to date informational material for a professional audience and identifying critical potential changes to Andean Ecosystems that would be considered threats to Andean agriculture. Climate threats were then used to suggest possible effects on particular Andean crops such as potatoes, quinoa, corn and others. Lastly a series of example adaptation strategies were developed that could be used to increase resiliency of these crops to climate threats. The report will be used to develop a micro financing program, for small holders, that will base loan risk and hence the repayment arrangements, on the incorporation of ecosystem based adaptation strategies on their farms. Lead Consultant: Sustainability Assessment, Planning & Reporting NatureSweet, LTD My team designed and implemented sustainability assessment criteria and data gathering tools, for baseline and multiple year performance evaluation. We developed a series of data analysis tools, including a customized carbon calculation tool for scopes 1,2 and 3, managed report design and creation, presented project findings to the CEO and leadership team. 2 Lead Consultant United Nations Environment Programme, Panama Research and development of presentation literature on the use of ecosystem services for the adaptation to climate change (so called Ecosystem based Adaptation EbA). Developed and consolidated definitions on the use of the EbA approaches to provide the UN a formal guide within which to propose and evaluate programmes in climate change adaptation. Lead Sustainable Agricultural Assessor National Mango Board Developed and implemented baseline sustainability and carbon footprint assessment and reporting for imported mangos from Mexico. The comprehensive supply chain assessment included a study of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain and carbon sequestration through the measurement of mango tree growth in a variety of environmental conditions in Mexico. Assessment results were delivered directly to the board of directors of the National Mango Board. This is a multi year contract. Carbon Emissions Accounting and Sustainability Expert American Lamb Board Undertook comprehensive within farm gate carbon emissions review of lamb production from the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Aided a one day workshop with the board of directors where a draft sustainability strategy was developed. Developed suite of baseline sustainability indicators with implementation of baseline assessment of the national industry planned for Analyzed and reported on sustainability metrics from over 1000 producers to build a large and comprehensive overview of best and risk practices of this agricultural sector. Lead Researcher Land Management and Forestry Researcher on land management and conservation planning projects in a variety of mixed ecosystems including the Madroño Valley and Panama Canal Watersheds in Panama, between 2005 to present. Used GIS to analyze and elucidate human development, ecosystem services and individual biodiversity conservation needs. Created and implemented forest carbon measurement and calculation algorithms to understand forest carbon dynamics as well as methodologies to incorporate organismic and physical environmental (including climatological) variance. COCOBOLO NATURE RESERVE: PANAMA Founder and Project Manager of the CNR, a 1000 acre rainforest reserve in Panama created to provide an outside education and research center for students to learn about the vital role rainforests play in the world. Lead Consultant Carbon Accounting Led this enterprise carbon accounting project for a large real estate corporation in the Pacific North West. We created a baseline greenhouse gas emission for several of its assets and identified key progress that had been made since the baseline was established with opportunities to reduce emissions further and offset those that could not be reduced. Our team developed the inventory, conducted the analysis and reporting and presented findings to the Executive Committee. We also conducted research to identify Page 2

3 key offset projects available and the relative pros and cons of each. Advisor / Editor Carbon Disclosure Project Research advisor for a study of the CDP s agricultural supply chain pilot survey in 2010/11. Editor of final report released in December Researcher/Advisor Endangered Species Conservation investment strategic advisor for large philanthropic group. Identify global hotspots of biodiversity using endemic floral and faunal range patterns. Developed an endangered species evaluation tool and identification matrix. Identified potential field collaborators for the purchase of conservation land in the tropics. Developed a project evaluation methodology. Researcher Endangered Species Worked on the conservation of several endangered species between 1992 and 2008 including Juan Fernandez Firecrown, Darwin s Fox, Red wolf, Ethiopian Wolf, Grey Wolf as well as several endangered ecosystems including the Andean dwarf forest and East African Volcanic ring. Led teams including students, international and local researchers in the development of programs for data collection, analysis and implementation. Project Manager Large Berry Brand Lead project manager on sustainability assessment and reporting project for this US based global leader with production and distribution facilities. Designed data collection tools to obtain a wide variety of data on KPIs relevant to the company that include amongst others water, carbon emissions, agrochemical use and waste throughout North and South America. Managed a team of consultants that undertook a western hemisphere risk assessment for this company forecasting over the next 10 years as well as engaging executive leaders of the company in sustainability strategy on a global basis. Lead Scientific Advisor NRDC Acted as scientific advisor in the analysis of product food waste for this ground breaking pilot project that attempted to calculate the resources wasted on produce that does not reach market. Project Manager: Design and Implementation of Sustainability Data Quality Management System NatureSweet LTD Design and implementation of sustainability data quality management system for the company s seven facilities and 4,000+ staff. Business processes were mapped and reporting requirements updated to meet the organization s evolving sustainability strategy in order to phase out a decentralized excelbased system. With user input into the design process and full user training delivered as part of implementation the data quality management system Page 3

4 allows for greater efficiency and accuracy for data collection across the enterprise as well as real-time reporting of company performance against key sustainability indicators. Project Manager: Operational and Organizational Sustainability Assessments and Strategy Development NatureSweet LTD Long-term engagement to build the technical capacity and organizational culture to make the company a leader in sustainability in the agricultural sector. Based upon an annual sustainability assessment that uses over 10,000 data points, the organizational sustainability priorities are developed and implementation plans set.
