10 METHANOL PROCESS 1. Syngas Preparatin fr methanl synthesis is dne using steam refrming f the natural gas feedstck. Once sulfur is remved, the natural gas is steam refrmed with cmbined refrming with a steam refrmer furnace fllwed by an xygen-blwn autthermal refrmer (ATR) 2. Methanl Synthesis the syngas is sent t a gas-phase synthesis technlgy. This is a wrld scale capacity methanl synthesis lp prcess with cpper-based catalysts 3. Methanl Purificatin/Distillatin the crude methanl prduced in the methanl synthesis unit cntains water, disslved gases, and small quantities f unavidable byprducts partly higher and partly lwer biling than methanl. The purpse f distillatin is t remve these impurities at a minimum lss f methanl s that pure, chemical-grade methanl is btained

11 METHANOL END USES The three largest derivatives f methanl are frmaldehyde, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and acetic acid. Methanl is seeing grwing demand, especially in Asia, in fuel applicatins such as dimethyl ether (DME), bidiesel, and the direct blending int gasline. Other uses: The largest slvent use fr methanl is as a cmpnent f windscreen wash antifreeze Used t extract, wash, dry, and crystallize pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals Methylamines are used as intermediates in a range f specialty chemicals with applicatins in water treatment chemicals, shamps, liquid detergents and animal feeds
