1 i /index.html April 18, 2013 India-Japan Energy Forum 2013 First Technology Exhibition will also be Held to Accelerate the Dissemination of Japan s Energy Technologies The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will hold the India-Japan Energy Forum from September 10 to 14, 2013 in New Delhi, the capital city of India. NEDO and the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) of India have held the forum four times to date to provide experts from public and private sectors of both countries with opportunities to have discussions in the energy field. Moreover, the forum s first technology exhibition will be held to expand the scope of the forum. The forum will contribute to addressing energy and environmental issues in India by promoting business matching between Japanese and Indian companies to accelerate the dissemination of Japan s advanced renewable energy and energy conservation technologies developed and demonstrated through NEDO s projects. 1. Forum Background As a result of India s rapid economic development, energy demand has also been increasing. Therefore, stable energy supplies and environmental protection measures have become major issues in India. In order to contribute to addressing these issues, NEDO has been actively carrying out demonstration projects on Japan s advanced renewable and energy conservation technologies in cooperation with the Indian government. To disseminate the results of such projects, business matching is important for Japanese companies which provide technologies and Indian companies that adopt them. For this reason, NEDO will provide opportunities for business matching between Japanese and Indian companies at the forum. The importance of the forum in expanding bilateral energy cooperation was reaffirmed in the Japan-India Energy Dialogue carried out between both governments in October Forum Overview The forum consists of two sessions, a conference and exhibition session. The conference

2 session will be co-hosted by NEDO and TERI and will include discussions between experts from public and private sectors of Japan and India. The exhibition session will be co-hosted by NEDO and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). During the exhibition, a Japanese technology exhibition and business matching discussions will be carried out. 1) India-Japan Energy Forum 2013 Conference Date: Tuesday, September 10 to Wednesday, September 11 Venue: Le Meridien New Delhi, New Delhi, India Co-hosts: NEDO, TERI Conference overview: Experts from public and private sectors of Japan and India will gather to exchange opinions on current energy situations, issues and technology trends. 2) India-Japan Energy Forum 2013 Exhibition Date: Thursday, September 12 to Saturday, September 14 Venue: India Expo Center, Greater Noida, India Co-hosts: NEDO, JETRO Exhibition overview: Japan s advanced technologies developed and demonstrated through NEDO s projects will be exhibited and business matching opportunities will be provided to accelerate the dissemination of Japan s technologies. 3. NEDO s Activities in India (please refer to the accompanying material) NEDO has been actively carrying out demonstration projects on Japan s advanced renewable and energy conservation technologies in India. 4. 4 NEDO s Activities in India (1) 1. The Model Project for Energy Management Systems in Telecommunication Towers ( ) Renewable energy technologies, including lithium-ion batteries and energy management system, will be introduced at India s telecommunication towers, thereby reducing diesel oil and energy consumption. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Ministry of Communications and Information Technology 3. The Model Project for Advanced Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycling System ( ) Based on Japanese advanced technologies and know-how, a system to efficiently recycle and dispose of waste electrical and electronic equipment, which is environmentally sound and suitable for local conditions, will be developed and demonstrated. Nippon Magnetic Dressing Co., Ltd. Entrusted Companies NEC Corporation, Pixela Corporation 2. The Model Project for Microgrid System using Largescale PV Power generation and Related Technologies ( ) A power supply system combining a PV power generation system and microgrid system will be established at Neemrana industrial park in Rajasthan in order to provide companies in the industrial park and power grids with a stable power supply. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Entrusted Companies Hitachi, Ltd., Itochu Corporation, Hitachi Systems, Ltd. 4. The Model Project for Converting a Diesel Generator to Dual-fuel Operation ( ) In this project, an existing diesel generator has been modified in order to use natural gas which has been converted from diesel oil. This system helps reduce GHG emissions and improve energy efficiency. JFE Engineering Corporation

5 NEDO s Activities in India (2) 5. The Model Project for Waste Heat Recovery System of Cement Plant This system is designed to recover heat from hot exhaust gases emitted during the cement production process in the form of steam to generate electricity. The electricity is used to run the process, thereby decreasing the use of fossil fuel required to operate a cement plant. Ministry of Commerce and Industry Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. 6. The Model Project for Increasing the Efficient Use of Energy Using a Coke Dry Quenching System ( ) Hot coke from a coke oven is quenched in a coke dry quenching system using nitrogen gas in place of the conventional wet cooling process using water, and waste heat is recovered and used in the steel manufacturing process. This reduces energy consumption and the spread of atmospheric pollutants, such as coal dust. Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. 7. The Model Project for Utilization of Sensible Heat from Blast Furnace Hot Stove Waste Gas Hot combustion exhaust gas recovered from a blast furnace oven is used to preheat combustion air and fuel gas, thereby reducing energy consumption. Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. 8. The Model Project for Highly Efficient Coal Preparation Technology ( ) Although Indian coal is environmentally-friendly as it is low in sulfur and phosphor, it contains a large amount of ash and its calorific value is therefore low. Coal with consistent quality can be supplied by using this technology. The project aims to improve the efficient use of coal and reduce environmental burdens through the widespread dissemination of this technology in India. Ministry of Coal Entrusted Companies Japan Coal Energy Center, Nagata Engineering Co., Ltd.

6 NEDO s Activities in India (3) 9. The Model Project for Sinter Cooler Waste Heat Recovery ( ) Sensible heat generated during the sinter cooling process is recovered and routed to a waste heat recovery boiler. The heat is then used to drive a steam turbine generator and produce electric power, thereby reducing energy consumption. JP Steel Plantech Co. 10. Capacity Building Project at Regional Energy Efficiency Centre ( ) A regional energy efficiency centre was built at Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Productivity in Chennai and training equipment was installed. This project is designed to help candidate trainers obtain the skills necessary to operate the training equipment as well as to help them gain the ability to independently conduct capacity building activities related to energy efficient technologies in the future.
