Historical and Current Status Energy Production 11

Historical and Current Status Energy Production The power was produced mainly to address the power needs regardless of safety concerns because there were no robust regulations. Most of the coal power plants didn t include filters for carbon and fly ash. Some examples of early designed nuclear power plants (NPPs) are Dresden and Chernobyl. Shippingport NPP had severe problems about the reactor coolant system. Chernobyl NPP did not include containment which is a necessary component for radioactive material leakage. 12

Status Energy Production From Past to Future Renewable 18

New Trends for Energy The new power plants are designed based on the following concerns: fluctuating energy market, safety, security, technology transfer, integration of power plant to new energy systems (such as hybrid energy systems), capital and operational cost, research and development investment, classified and copyrighted information, know-how, the capability of the existing private industry, strategic decisions of a country for the future. 19

New Trends for Energy based on capital, operating (O&M) and carbon costs Suggested power sources to decrease carbon emission where CCS: Carbon Capture and Storage Ref: BBC, Article by R. Anderson,

New Trends for Energy based on safety 24

New Trends for Energy based on simplicity 25

New Trends for Energy based on security After 9/11, The regulations for nuclear security changed. Since there are other presentations, I skip this item. The NPP are designed based on new design criteria against every possible attacks: Unground design, Revised NPP layouts for internal terrorist attacks, 26

New Trends for Energy based on new methods 24hr power demand in winter and summer 27

New Trends for Energy (Hybrid Systems) 28

New Trends for Energy Benchmark of Turkey & Other Countries TURKEY Strategic Plans: 1. Enrichment of the energy mix Renewable energies wind, solar & geothermal Nuclear Power Traditional LWRs 2. Reduce carbon gas emission 3. Need to focus on design of power plants Imports nearly 99% of the natural gas imports around 89% of its oil supplies. 29

New Trends for Energy World s Electricity

Strategic Suggestions to NEW Turkey 1. Replace retired coal and natural gas power plants with renewable and nuclear power 2. Hybrid energy systems and microgrids can be used especially in rural area 3. Design & manufacture a Turkish LWR in 12yrs

Strategic Suggestions to NEW Turkey 3. Design & manufacture a Turkish LWR in 12yrs Gen III+ LWRs Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Nuclear Submarine

Strategic Suggestions to NEW Turkey Steps to achieve the goals for designing Turkish NPPs: 1. Trust ourselves because Turkey has human resource inside and outside of Turkey and we have NPP design experience, 2. Turkey has strong manufacturing companies that can be used in nuclear industry, 3. Collaborate with other companies, organizations and countries, 4. Don t hesitate to hire international experts to be successful, 5. Encourage private sector to specialize specific manufacturing of NPP s components by giving government supports, 6. Make NRC strong.
