8 breakthrough innovation, real-world applications Every year SUEZ invests 74 million in over 65 research and development programs to ensure that our clients benefit from continually improving, triedand-tested technology. In the mining sector, this includes solutions such as: Rehab Advanced Resource Recovery Technology (Rehab-ARRT) Using organic waste for optimum soil regeneration. Organic by-products in mine waste & other municipal waste are recovered to create quality compost ready to be used in site remediation; thereby minimizing the disposal of residual waste to landfill and maximizing recovery. Densadeg Excellent effluent quality and performance. Densadeg is a high-rate solids contact clarifier that combines optimized flocculation, internal and external sludge recirculation, and plate settling, in two conjoined vessels. Passive treatment for acid mine drainage Groundwater remediation and water resource protection. a full range of reliable technologies Passive water treatment combined with water monitoring programs takes advantage of natural physical, chemical and biological processes to remove water contaminants without additional physical or chemical inputs (for example, bacteria-controlled metal precipitation, filtration with plants or through soil and sediments). Desalination Ion exchange resins (demineralization) Physical chemical treatment: neutralization, oxidation, reduction, coagulation, flocculation Filtration Polishing Disinfection Thermal deaeration Biological treatments Electrochemistry for metal recovery Resins for metal removal Selective salt recovery Membranes, such as UF/NF/RO Metal neutralization in wastewater & high-density sludge treatment Zero liquid discharge, using evaporation & crystallization Solid dewatering Modelling technologies SIG Environmental Management Systems

9 committed to working with communities Corporate social responsibility is a critical concern for the mining industry. At SUEZ, we believe and experience everyday that profitability and responsibility are compatible goals. Years of collaboration with local communities and governments have provided us with wide experience in constructive dialogue and community reporting. We support communities around mining operations with social and environmental projects to raise awareness, develop knowledge and improve skills so we help build a more sustainable future for all. objective: compliance with increasingly stringent national environmental standards measured benefits: 65% increase in wastewater treatment capacity, while reducing molybdenum content of discharged water to below the 1 ppm target supporting Codelco, the world s leading producer of copper El Teniente mine, Chile The proposed solution allowed Codelco to reduce its concentration of molybdenum to less than the originally fixed rate, and meet the very stringent regulations in place in the country Paulina Chinga Colarea, site manager Run by Codelco, El Teniente s 2,400 kms of galleries produce 400,000 tonnes of copper a year, as well as 5,200 tonnes of molybdenum, a brittle grey metal by-product. To meet stringent environmental regulations, the company needed to clean mine effluent of molybdenum, while also increasing wastewater flow capacity to 2,500 litres a second. So SUEZ installed and now operates a cutting-edge facility that now meets both goals thanks to its patented Densadeg process. diverting waste from landfill at Curragh Mine Curragh Mine, Queensland, Australia SUEZ has been providing a Total Waste Management service at Wesfarmers Curragh Mine in Queensland for four years. The mine site spans more than 12,600 hectares, has over 600 permanent employees plus contractors, and is subject to some of the strictest environmental regulations in the world. There are more than 25 potential waste streams on-site, including hazardous waste. Colour-coded bins, specialist on-site staff, and dedicated on-site landfill and sorting facilities ensure waste is safely managed and valuable resources are recovered. SUEZ also provides specialist industrial services to the mine, including vacuum loading of liquid wastes, high-pressure water blasting and potable-water delivery. objective: safely manage over 25 waste streams and maximize landfill diversion measured benefits: a record 66% diversion from landfill in 2014

10 increasing water supply to reach production objectives Koniambo nickel mine, New Caledonia award winning water reuse solutions Grupo Cosentino, Almeria, Spain objective: supply water to heating and cooling systems to support production increase measured benefits: 129 m 3 /hr of drinking water and 53 m 3 /hr of demineralized process water produced by a seawater desalination plant In 2008, Koniambo Nickel SAS commissioned SUEZ to design and bring into service a seawater desalination system and a demineralized-water production system for its mine in New Caledonia. Both companies collaborated throughout the project, from facilities installation, to staff training and plant maintenance. The new water treatment technology covers the needs of the heating and cooling systems, enabling KNS to increase its production while reducing its water and energy consumption. objective: improve water sustainability at naturalrock mine providing material for ultracompact surfaces measured benefits: greatly improved water management, including 90% reuse rates and water-resource protection, cost reductions, and compliance with Grupo Cosentino s CSR commitments The use of high-quality water in the production process is an extremely important factor for us, but our main objective is to reuse this water. This plant highlights Grupo Cosentino s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsibility Grupo Cosentino Grupo Cosentino s natural-rock mine in Almeria is situated in a region of water stress and so needed an effluent treatment plant that reused as much water as possible. The combined solution proposed by SUEZ is based on reverse osmosis membranes, decanters, and sulphate-reduction treatment and ensures water reuse rates of 90%. The project has been awarded a number of environmental awards, including a place in the Sustainable Mining Development Forum s 2014 Innovation Gallery. SUEZ profile and key figures cleaning up contamination: from brownfield to greenfield The Avenue Coking Works, Chesterfield, UK objective: restore heavily polluted coal mine site to its natural state for tertiary activity measured benefits: 600,000 m 3 of contaminated soil and sludge treated This is one of the most complex civil engineering remediation schemes in Europe and we have worked hard to make sure the remediation works set new standards and provide a benchmark for other heavily contaminated sites. Marcus Foweather, project director at VSD Avenue The Avenue was originally the site of a coal mine, then a coking plant, and, after its closure, one of the most heavily polluted sites in Europe. SUEZ worked on a complete decontamination solution. This included excavating 2 million m 3 of contaminated material and removing hydrocarbons, heavy metals, cyanide and waste chemicals from it using bioremediation, sorting and soil washing, and a specially constructed thermal desorption unit. The project is an ambitious example of how a challenging environmental site can be restored to land suitable for tertiary, cultural and sport-based use, as well as a nature reserve. SUEZ, a worldwide leader in water and waste resources management Our goal is to ensure the most rational, efficient and sustainable management of today s and tomorrow s resources: optimizing processes, securing new alternatives for water supply, protecting the environment and recovering value from waste and by-products. Committed to sustainable development, SUEZ is a key partner for industries and cities to support them in making the most of their resources. Focusing on environmental and economic performance, SUEZ provides solutions to manage the complete water and waste cycle a core element of the circular economy billion in total revenues in ,000 employees
