1 Some Innovative and Best Practices for colleges Environment consciousness: Prof.G.D.Sharma Vice-Chancellor Bilaspur University,Bilaspur (C.G) Trekking programmes, Forest visit, National garden or Bio-sphere visit, River site and village pond visit for pollution etc. The Nature Club can be established to conduct nature camps and nature walks in association with some NGO. Observation of Environment Day, Hiroshima Day, NSS Unit may associate with the Nature club to enumerate and survey all the plants in the campus and give name plate boards on the trees to identify them. The department of Environment or Botany may conduct a study on Carbon Footprint. Energy conservation: The college can take many steps to minimize energy consumption. These include:- Replacement of energy consuming tube light & bulb with energy saving CFL.tubes & LED bulbs. Energy consumption in the hostel should be monitored by a committee which can successfully bring down power consumption by enlightening the inmates about the indispensability of energy saving. The Energy Conservation Club can conduct various programmes, discussions and campaigns to create an energy conserving mentality among the students. The college can foster an energy saving attitude among students and staff through various programmes, discussions and campaigns in association with Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board. College can also organize an inter departmental, power quiz for the students. Ecofriendly Campus: Use of renewable energy. College can prepare a proposal to install solar panels in the campus for which subsidy can be obtained from the State Government or Non-conventional Energy ministry, Govt.of India. Rain water harvesting. There should be provision for rain water harvesting in the main building of the college. Efforts for carbon Neutrality: The old practice of burning waste may be stopped. To collect the waste every day and bury degradable waste near trees or in a nearby pit so that it becomes manure for the trees and other vegetation or vermi composting. 1d/ some inn/2015

2 The non-degradable waste regularly can be collected by local agencies for recycling. Biogas -plant set up. NSS volunteers and NCC cadets should plant trees in the campus. The college should conduct awareness programmes on global warming, Ozone depletion and such other environment related issues. Swachh Campus-Green Campus: The Nature Club or NSS of the college can organize tree plantation drive regularly. The Department of Botany or College can maintain a herbal garden in the campus. There can be Peepal, Kadamba, Batvrsaksha plantation as part of the green campus, as these trees give out more oxygen and have wide-spreading foliage, and also facilitate deep and sustained ground water percolation. Regular cleaning of campus by NSS,Volunteers, staff & Teachers. Hazardous Waste Management: Harmful chemical wastes from the chemistry laboratory can be collected in the tanks specially constructed for this purpose. These tanks are to be covered safely so that these chemicals do not come into contact with outer environment. The chemicals are to be then neutralized and discarded. Other waste is disposed in waste bins placed at various points in the institution. They are to be periodically cleaned away by the staff. Recyclable waste is to be regularly cleared by those who are in the recycling business. Biological waste is sterilized by heating and discarded. E-waste is to be kept in a separate room within the college. The institution has to start deliberations with experts and business firms for safe disposal/ recycling of these materials. Swachh. Innovations: Some innovations to facilitate academic improvement and student progress like; Hindi Club or cultural Club. The club can be started to promote the students s interest in Hindi Language and literature, cultural activities, poetic meet and a leadership development. ASAP (Additional skill Acquistion Programme) This has been introduced by Govt.of Chhattisgarh under CM s scheme and PM Skill Development mission to equip the students with good communication skills and the basics of IT. 4 Workshop on making of Soap, cloth flower, doll etc. NSS volunteers can be exposed to soap, cloth flower, doll etc making workshop in association with women ITI or any other club. Success story of Best practice-i Artificial Ground-water Recharging:- Goal: Though the area where the colleges are situated get good supply of rain, the water storage capacity of the soil is very low. The practice therefore should aim to build up groundwater resources and to reduce surface run off. Context: Most of the colleges are located in a geographical area where the soil is hard and rocky. This often leads to surface run off of rain water resulting in low groundwater resources so that soon after the rainy season the soil becomes rather dry. Since the institution gives utmost importance to protect its greenery, so it is imperative to build up water table resources. The Practice: Simple form of groundwater recharge practice which can help to store water naturally in earth can be adopted. For this rain pits are dug in the college campus. These pits are then back filled with gravel and coarse sand.the root rain water is collected and collected in these pits. Evidence of Success: The outcome of the practice can be very heartening as most of the saplings that will be planted can be vigorously survive the offensive heat of summer. The benefit shared by the local : their wells will not dry up and sufficient underground water can prevent green depletion of the area. This can provide the NSS students and staff much encouragement as a lot of requests for continuing the practice can come up from the local people. Problems can be Encountered: Since the ground is too rocky in many place, the students can find it difficult to dig through the rocks, in such cases, Plastic containers or cemented container can be used. Best practice-ii Setting up vegetable garden: Goal: To Promote organic vegetable farming in villages and make the village self- sufficient in vegetable produce. Context: Chhattisgarh is a consumer State for vegetables and fruits which depends on other states in India for some of these food products. The fruits and vegetables required by the state are received mainly from M.P and U.P. Most often the vegetables arriving in the state are laden with hazardous chemical pesticides. This creates health problems in diverse forms. In this context the NSS units of college can take up the mission of creating awareness about the harmful effects of consuming pesticide laden vegetables and fruits and persuading the 4d/ some inn/2015

5 people who are interested in vegetable cultivation by setting up organic vegetable gardens in selected households. Practice: The NSS volunteers can take up the initiative to set up vegetable gardens in Grama Panchayat with the expertise in put by the experts in Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) who can also fund the project.seeds required for setting up the gardens are provided by KVK. The NSS volunteers may assist in maintaining the gardens. Particular care can be taken to avoid the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Evidence of success: There can be innumerable requests from various people in the Panchayat to assist them in setting up such vegetable gardens in their homes. Problems encountered: Initially, the villagers are reluctant to provide space for setting the gardens.they will be doubtful about the quality of seeds, maintenance of the gardens and also about the expenses to be incurred. This list of best practices and innovations is not the exhaustive ones but an idea to the colleges to start some student centric out reach and skill creating approach. During the workshop interactive session will provide better opportunity to know more such innovative practices to enhance the quality of education d/ some inn/2015
