WATER & HEALTH World Water Week in Stockholm 2018 Together we sing, not sink

Background The Dvorishka River is transboundary river with upper flow located at the Macedonian side of the Maleshevska Mtn. and inflow in River Lebnitza in Bulgaria. This area is source of mainly intact nature, with some smaller settlements spread around.

Background More or less the similar situation occurs in village Dvorishte on the Macedonian side. The effects of this current situation are: unpleasant for visiting the villages; there are evidence of destroyed environments/habitats and potential of spreading diseases. In village Dobri Laki-Bulgaria, as consequence of bad road the trash company does not go there so often to collect the trash. Also there is lack of septic waste (Sewage discharge waste water) and urbanization. Furthermore, the local community are not aware about the effects of plastic and waste pollution of the local environment.

Location v. Dobri Laki Bulgaria; v. Dvorishte R. Macedonia

Data resources investigation Up today, no previous activities are known so far in this area, and there is no effort to measure the pollution impact of the water environment (the only available information are the 2 self initiated visits (October 2017 and May 2018) of some of the sites downstream this rivers where the river pollution was observed, based on observation of aquatic macroinvertebrates fauna).

About the project The in situ visits show lack of awareness and lack of concrete actions, like shortage of public services to collect the trash and lack of infrastructure in the settlement areas, negatively impacting the river. We focus on: -Educating and introducing active recycling, - Fostering active collaboration within the two transboundary communities.

Project goals Educate local communities to collaborate on international level, emphasizing cross-border collaboration by taking into consideration common concerns, problems and exploring together common solutions and actions. Non-formal education - to mobilize youth to lead awareness raising activities for the entire community about pollution effects and bring economic added value of the landscape such as rural tourism development.

OVERALL PROJECT OBJECTIVES To raise awareness at local communities about the water pollution; To clean the river beds; To learn to recycle pet plastic; To create green jobs opportunities.

Specific goals to be achieved AWARENESS GOALS: To Educate local communities and to provoke interest for taking direct actions; Implementation of active recycling from each community; Active collaboration with the municipality community. Goal 1: Goal 2: Goal 3: ACTION GOALS: Cleaning the river beds by removing plastic and trash; Involving local people in cleaning activities to be directly involved; Motivation of the youth and local teachers - sustainability of the program.
