CONSIDER THE CHERRY TREE: Thousands of blossoms create food for birds, humans, and other animals in order that one pit might eventually fall onto the ground, take root, and grow. WHO WOULD LOOK AT THE GROUND LITTERED WITH CHERRY BLOSSOMS AND COMPLAIN, HOW INEFFICIENT AND WASTEFUL! The tree makes copious blossoms and fruit without depleting its environment.

CRADLE TO CRADLE ATTRIBUTES PRODUCTS ARE ASSESSED AND OPTIMIZED TO ADDRESS 5 KEY AREAS: RENEWABLE ENERGY MATERIAL HEALTH CLEAN WATER MATERIAL REUSE SOCIAL FAIRNESS

OVERVIEW Identify nutrient metabolism (technical or biological). Homogenous materials do not contain banned list chemicals such as PVC, teflon, and phthalates above allowable thresholds. Silver-level: No risk from carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins. Gold-level: All chemicals of concern & thousands more red-assessed chemicals are eliminated. INNOVATION PROJECT for the fashion industry BANNED LISTS PARTNERSHIP ARE A GOOD with leaders PLACE TO ALIGNS WITH INDUSTRY START, BUT GOALS Higg Index, EP&L, Bluesign, ZDHC/Detox list RELIANCE ON CREATES TRUSTED MATERIALS LISTS ALONE CAN LEAD TO through Materials Library REGRETABLE VERIFIED POSITIVE SUBSTITUTIONS IMPACT through impact reporting.

Less than one year after receiving Silver level certification, IceStone s R&D team set out to eliminate problematic chemicals from the product

LET S DESIGN OVERVIEW Identify nutrient metabolism (technical or biological). Use recyclable or compostable materials. Use recycled or rapidly renewable content. Develop a process for actively recovering or cycling the nutrients in the product back to its respective metabolism. PRODUCTS THAT WILL INTENTIONALLY UPCYCLE INTO NEW PRODUCTS SO WE CAN LEAVE A LEGACY OF GOOD HEALTH AND BEAUTIFUL DESIGN FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Ecovative Mushroom materials are an alternative to plastic foams that are grown into packaging, insulation, and other products.

OVERVIEW Displace energy produced from fossil fuels, which emit carbon, with renewable energy. Change the quantity and quality of energy use to positively affect the balance of carbon in the atmosphere and ultimately the climate. Buy green power or renewable credits. Eliminate emissions and produce renewable energy in excess to be supplied to local communities. BE MORE GOOD - GENERATE CLEAN ENERGY FOR OUR OWN FACILITIES AND FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

If it weren t for Cradle to Cradle, our company would not have started.

OVERVIEW Understand and take responsibility for water withdrawals, consumption, and releases within local ecosystem. Use online tools to identify if water scarcity or sensitive ecosystems are serious concerns where you manufacture. Work with factories and mills that have water filtration systems already installed, or ask to install them. Work with factories and mills that have not received a significant violation of their discharge permit within the last two years. Characterize and assess process chemicals in effluent and ensure that effluents leaving facility do not contain problematic chemicals. PRODUCE A CLEAN WATER EFFLUENT THAT MEETS DRINKING WATER QUALITY STANDARDS.

The optimization of the chemistry caused a change in the mill s effluent; the water now flowing out of the mill was actually cleaner than the inflowing water.

OVERVIEW Conduct a social responsibility audit to ensure fundamental human rights are being protected. Develop a positive impact strategy. Source materials or products that are certified as socially responsible by credible 3 rd party standards (e.g. Fairtrade). Use tools like the social hotspots database to choose places with better standards for workers and communities. Develop an innovative social project to positively impact communities. Technological diversity is key for innovation; explore different options in looking for creative solutions. WE WANT TO ASK YOU NOW TO CONSIDER CELEBRATING A DELIGHTFULLY DIVERSE WORLD IF YOU CELEBRATE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING, YOU RE HONORING HIM OR HER OPENLY, WITHOUT GUILT OR FURTIVENESS. Excerpt From: William McDonough and Michael Braungart.

Using renewable energy and clean materials to make safe, healthy products, the factory is designed to be a generative, supportive neighbor that honors community history. -William McDonough
