St Marys Bay & Masefield Beach Improvement Project Preferred medium-term initiative from 2016 Water Quality Improvement Programme (Watercare, Healthy Waters, Panuku, Auckland Transport, NZTA, Mana Whenua) A local network improvement project, replumbing Healthy Waters outfall assets A first step towards wider improvements of the Waitemata design to accommodate any long-term network development strategy Proportionate investment in a long-term asset base, with delivery and tangible benefits realised by all going well

St Marys Bay & Masefield Beach Improvement Project Significant improvement to both beaches benefits wider Council family and ratepayers: Removes combined sewer overflows (CSOs) from beach locations Significantly reduce frequency of overflows Reduces overall wastewater contamination of the harbour Replaces existing failed outfall at Masefield Beach with another at a better location Enables use and development of these waterfront public spaces to continue Enables further improvements to be progressed

Relative scale of investment St Marys / Masefield: 5 overflows, $0.04b Wider Combined Sewer Area: 200 overflows, $1.7b minimum

Project Area 5 Engineered Overflow Points discharging through 3 outfalls

Reduction in CSOs & contamination The frequency of overflows from these EOPs reduces significantly, from over 200 per annum to around 20 The amount of wastewater discharged is reduced by around 85% (storage and return to sewer) The residual overflows /contaminants discharge to the Harbour Channel from the new, longer outfall for better dilution and dispersion

Extent of contamination existing situation (from the 5 project EOPs)

Extent of contamination after commissioning (from 5 project EOPS)

90 th Percentile Concentrations (wastewater contaminant indicator) No local beaches are adversely impacted by discharges from the new outfall Existing Future

Integration into Safeswim Programme St Marys Bay will be one of the first locations to receive onsite signage to indicate risk of wastewater contamination this will provide clear picture of what is happening now and provide a clear and public baseline to measure actual project benefits (in terms of number of low risk days) once the project is commissioned Installation of the sign is scheduled for before the end of

Integration into further network improvement Significant number of EOPs and contamination remains to be addressed Watercare and Auckland Council have released their joint plan for long-term improvement of the wider combined network. Due to the age and complexity of the northern catchments (including Herne Bay) further work is required to determine a preferred approach The Western Isthmus Water Quality Improvement programme information is publically available as part of Council Environment & Community Committee Agenda (October 17) PDF More information can be found in the FAQ section of the SafeSwim website In the long-term, the St Marys Bay/Masefield project assets can function as part of a combined network or separate stormwater network In the medium long term, the project provides water quality benefits to the existing combined network as well as the much needed renewal of Masefield Beach outfall
