7 The Future

8 MINER Act Implementation June 3, 28 Issuance of proposed belt air regulations final regulations by 12/31/8 June 3, 28 Issuance of Refuge Alternatives regulations final regulations by 12/31/8 June 15, 29 Requirement for wireless communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking Non-MINER Act Retreat Mining NIOSH to conduct, in collaboration with the University of Utah and West Virginia University, a study of the recovery of coal pillars through retreat room and pillar mining practices in underground coal mines at depths greater than 15 feet. submit a report, not later than two years (12/9), containing the results of the study to the Committees on Appropriations of the House of Representatives and the Senate recommendations to enhance the safety of miners working in underground coal mines where retreat mining in room and pillar operations is utilized. Among other things, the recommendations should identify means of adapting any practical technology to the mining environment to improve miner protections during mining at depths greater than 15 feet

9 Promoting Safety Promoting Safety

10 Industry Safety Initiatives Launched media communications protocol for use by mining operations in responding to a crisis Produced guide to manage mine site emergency preparedness activities Working with NIOSH to produce risk-based management tools and templates to promote culture of prevention NMA Objectives Restore public s belief that the industry places the safety of its workers above all else Implement the Mine Safety Technology and Training Commission s recommendation to establish preventative safety culture Facilitate reasonable implementation of MINER Act, including development of technology capable of meeting expectations
