4 1. Description of Bin Configuration a. Available Waste Streams The implemented waste management plan has standardised the following four waste streams across each tenancy. The colour of each bin will be colour coded in accordance to the Australian standards: - Red for general waste - Yellow for mixed recycling - Green for organic - Blue for paper and cardboard b. Bin Setup Description The setup described below has been implemented within each tenancy and must be respected. This proposal is a guide, and will be adapted to fit the individual requirements of tenancies. Break out/kitchen areas - One to two mixed recycling bins - One to two organic bins - One general waste bin Small kitchen areas - One mixed recycling bin - One general waste bin Open spaces - One mixed recycling bin - One paper and cardboard bin - One general waste bin Please note: Given the size of the tenancy, this setup will be present across multiple locations within the open space area. 5 2. Sorting Rules and Contamination Management All staff within the tenancy are required to respect and follow Collin Square s waste management plan. The following paragraphs detail the sorting rules for each respective stream and will provide guidance on how to comply with the management plan. a. Sorting Rules Mixed recycling This stream is dedicated to receiving the following empty containers and associated recyclable material: Hard plastic e.g. Chinese take-away containers and yoghurt containers Crunchable plastic e.g. Sushi packaging and biscuit liners Glass (unbroken) Metal and aluminium e.g. tuna cans The following is a list of the common contaminants that are present within the mixed recycling stream: No coffee cups No printing paper packaging No soft plastics e.g. cling wrap, zip lock bags and plastic bags No drinking glasses No straws These items are not to be disposed of within the mixed recycling stream and must be diverted to the general waste stream. Organic This stream is designed to only receive food waste such as: Coffee grounds Tea bags Rice Meat Bread The items listed below are common contaminants within the organic stream at Collins Square: No paper towel No soft plastics As these items are not food waste, they must be diverted to the general waste stream. Page 4 of 8

6 Paper and Cardboard This stream is dedicated to receive all types of paper and cardboard including: Office paper and stapled documents Magazines and newspapers Manila folders Cartons and cardboard packaging Please note: All paper documents that include a plastic window, staples and/or are spiral bound can be recycled within the paper and cardboard stream. The following list represents common contaminants present within the paper and cardboard stream: No waxed printing paper packaging No soft plastics e.g. plastic wrapping on magazines No plastic newspaper straps All these items must be disposed of within the provided general waste bins. General Waste All items that are not able to be recycled must be placed within the general waste bins. Such items include: Coffee cups Paper towel Soft plastics e.g. plastic wrap, zip lock bags and plastic bags Straws All recyclable items must be placed within the appropriate recycling stream. To assist staff in the correct disposal of all waste items, fixed bin labels will now accompany every bin. These labels will detail the allowable and disallowable items for each stream based on the common contaminants identified through Collin Square s bi-annual waste audit. For your reference, the implemented fixed bin labels have been attached as Appendix 1 within this document. Please be aware that the allowable items for each stream vary between waste contractors. The aforementioned items are specific to Collins Square and may be different to what is allowed where you live. Page 5 of 8

7 b. Contamination Management Collins Square management regularly monitor the recycling rate of the office tower and contamination rates for each stream, within each individual tenancy. Therefore, it is crucial that all staff members respect and utilise the implemented recycling streams. In the case of reoccurring contamination, Collins Square management will require a meeting with the tenant manager/representative to discuss the issue in greater detail. If the contamination continues, a financial penalty may occur if the waste contractor is forced to reject a bin due to excessive contamination. 3. The Cleaning Contractor Each tenancy is required to use Collins Square s appointed cleaning contractor for all cleaning services. A specific process has been established between Collins Square management and the cleaning contractor to optimise the collection of all waste streams. Subsequently, all cleaning staff are trained to correctly dispose of each waste stream. This process involves the use of clear bin liners for all recycling streams, and black liners for the general waste bins. This process ensures full transparency of the waste collection for all staff, and allows cleaning staff to visualise contamination within each recycling stream. Cleaning staff are required to report all significant contamination observed within a tenancy to Collins Square management. 4. Waste-Related Communication Procedures Collins Square management is dedicated to achieving the objectives of the waste management plan. As a result, feedback is highly encouraged as management endeavour to meet the needs of each tenancy. a. General Communication All staff are encouraged to regularly provide feedback and suggestions in relation to the management plan. This is to be provided to the appointed tenant representative who will pass all information on to Collins Square management. Because of this, all staff must be aware of who the appointed representative is within their tenancy. Page 6 of 8

8 b. Quarterly Meetings Quarterly meetings are standardised under Collins Square s waste management plan. They will be held between Collins Square management and the tenant manager and/or representative. A detailed report will be provided to Collins Square management about how the tenancy is progressing in relation to the building s waste objectives. Collins Square management will also address all the feedback that they have received from the tenancy. The tenant representative will provide a written summary of the meeting that will be available to all staff. c. Bin Management Collins Square s appointed cleaning contractor will ensure that all bins are kept in immaculate condition. If issues do arise in relation to the function of a particular bin, the tenant representative must be informed. It is then the responsibility of the representative to address this issue with Collins Square management. 5. Waste Education Sessions a. For the Tenant Representative The appointed tenant representative is required to attend a waste-related training/information session, led by Collins Square management. It is here that the representative will receive the necessary skills and information required to effectively communicate the tenancy changes to staff, along with being equipped with the knowledge to answer any questions staff may have. b. For the Staffing Team Under Collins Squares waste management plan all employees will be required to undergo a waste education session. Run by the appointed Collins Square management representative, this training session is designed to ensure that each staff member understands their requirements under the waste management plan. It will also describe the implemented bin set up whilst reinforcing the correct recycling procedures for the tenancy. All staff are encouraged to speak to their tenant representative if they require further clarification around any of the matters raised within this education session. Page 7 of 8
