4 What is a biofilm? A complex matrix of bacteria, fungi, and algae bound together in a sticky gel of polysaccharide and other organic contaminants attached to a surface Biofilm harbours harmful microorganisms

5 Where is the biofilm found? Generally form on any wet surface and are consequently found in many types of environments, especially in livestock drinking water systems How watering systems look like in livestock : see the video

6 Why is biofilm found? Organic particles coming from tap or well water and coming from the outlet side of the watering system form the biofilm Enclosed watering systems Operate on low pressure, producing no turbulence that can breakup biofilms High water temperature inside the houses The glucose in medecine is a nutrient for the biofilm This will affect the profitability of the integrator and the farmer

7 What are the consequences of biofilm presence? Poor food conversion ratio Lowered egg production, Increased mortality Negative impact on medication and vaccines delivered through the water lines Clogging of nipple drinkers Large variation in production Water and biofilm influence many parameters of the production

8 Classical chemical approach to fight biofilm Traditional disinfectants do not effectively penetrate the biofilm matrix Chlorine Chlorine Dioxide Hydrogen peroxide-based Most disinfectants are active against planktonic (unattached) microorganisms but are not effective against microorganisms in biofilm

14 What is scale and how is it caused? Hard water contains a large proportion of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, and sometimes iron and manganese Over time, these minerals will attach to the surfaces in contact with the water and progressively form scale.

15 What the consequences of mineral scale? Clogged plumbing and regulators Pressure loss Nipple drinkers sticking or leaking Scale has a rough surface that contains pitting, cracks, and crevices which can harbour microorganisms Over time, this is a substantial cost when one considers labour time and money for replacement

18 Aqua-4D concept Two basic modules: An almost unlimited use... An electronic device to generate preprogrammed electromagnetic signals Tubes specially designed to transmit signals in the water. According to the maximum flow to be treated, one or more tubes can be connected in parallel Flow rates capacity from 0 to 4150 m3/h The Aqua-4D technology works with a wide range of water chemistry. Effects are obtained with all pipe materials such as steel, copper, plastic The efficiency against biofilm is observed over several hundreds of meters, the effect on mineral scaling over kilometers of pipes from the point of treatment. 18
