3 investing in wrexham Wrexham Power Limited (WPL) is consulting the community on plans for Wrexham Energy Centre, a new gas-fired power station on Wrexham Industrial Estate. Our plans will: n Bring investment and more skilled jobs to Wrexham n Support the success of existing businesses on Wrexham Industrial Estate n Be part of securing the UK s supply of electricity. We will create: n Up to 1,200 construction jobs n Up to 50 highly skilled permanent jobs n An improved supply of power to the Wrexham Industrial Estate, increasing its attractiveness to businesses n The opportunity to provide cheaper power, gas and heat to businesses based on the Estate. We are still at an early stage of the project and this brochure introduces our plans and how you can have your say. More detailed information is available at Images of gas-fired power stations Martin Bodman Roger D. Smith about wrexham power limited WPL is a joint venture between St. Modwen and Glenfinnan. Both companies have extensive experience of large scale development and regeneration projects across the UK and in the energy market.

4 wrexham energy centre how will it work? The Wrexham Energy Centre proposals are for a combined cycle gas turbine power station (CCGT). Far more efficient than traditional gas power stations, CCGT plants use both gas and steam to generate electricity Initially, compressed air and ignited gas are fed into a combustion turbine that spins an electricity generator to produce electricity. The heat generated by this process is used to create steam, which is used to spin a second turbine attached to a separate electricity generator. This turns what could be waste heat into a valuable source of power. 1. Gas and air fed into turbine 2. Gas turbine drives generator, creating electricity 3. Left over heat creates steam 4. Steam drives turbine, driving generator, creating more electricity

5 wrexham energy centre what does it mean? We are proposing a new gas-fired power station on Wrexham Industrial Estate. The 1 GW (gigawatt) Energy Centre will provide enough power to supply 1,250,000 homes and has the potential to provide discounted heat, electricity and gas to businesses on the industrial estate. This represents a multi-million pound investment in Wrexham and the Wrexham Industrial Estate. Gas-fired power stations are, and will continue to be, a fundamental part of the UK s energy network. They are: the future of energy The UK and Europe are moving towards generating cleaner, low-carbon power. To meet EU emissions targets by 2020, coal and oil-fired power stations are set to close across the UK. A number of nuclear power stations are also coming to the end of their functional lives. In total, approximately 22 GW of generating capacity, more than one third of UK peak demand, has to be replaced and gas-fired power stations have an important role to play in meeting this energy challenge. 6 our site connecting the energy centre We would need to connect the Energy Centre to the national gas and electricity grid connections. At present we are looking at route corridor options to make these connections. At this early stage we are assessing our options and are seeking your feedback on: proposed gas connection study areas n The route corridor options for connecting the Energy Centre to the gas network (see right of this page) n The route corridor options for connecting the Energy Centre to the national electricity grid (see following page). a good location The Wrexham Industrial Estate is a good location for a new power station. Demand for electricity in Wrexham significantly outstrips local supply. After studying a number of potential local sites, we have chosen this one as: n It is near the national gas transmission network n There is a clear connection route to the national electricity grid n It has the potential to provide discounted power and heating to businesses on the industrial estate n It is an allocated development site with an existing consent for a 500,000 sq ft industrial building. The exact route and form for this infrastructure will be developed over the course of the consultation process, and after a preferred option has been selected.

8 involving the community We want to know your thoughts on the proposals for a new Energy Centre and the options for connecting it to the gas and electricity grids.
