For 150 years the port has served local industry and manufacturing, facilitating maritime trade and hosting world-class shipbuilding. Independent economic impact analysis by Edge Economics reveals the true extent of the port s contribution to the local and national economy, and the prospects for growth in the years ahead. By serving the UK energy sector and advanced manufacturing the port contributes to economic growth and supports jobs across the country. Increased economic activity in the port will see this role increase in the decade ahead. 5 8 9 A Bright Future ABP s Strategic Port Masterplan for Barrow anticipates a Golden Period over the next decade A critical role in the delivery of the 25bn of major new investment identified in the Cumbria LEP s Strategic Investment Plan Investment in the port will support delivery of the Cumbria LEP Strategic Economic Plan which identifies Advanced Manufacturing Growth and Nuclear and Energy Excellence as priorities Vital for the delivery of major private sector investments and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects

6 10 11 Opportunities for Growth Expansion of BAE Systems A 525m investment is being made in the Dreadnought Class Submarine Programme by BAE Systems as part of a 31bn government programme. New offshore wind activity Extension of the 2bn Walney Wind Farm. NuGen NuGen s Moorside Project aims to develop a new generation nuclear power station near Barrow, enough to power six million homes and equivalent to 7% of the UK s electricity requirements the project will create up to 6,500 jobs during constriction and 1000 direct jobs once operational. North West Coast Connections Construction of a new grid connection to link a new nuclear power station at Moorside will create up to 1,800 jobs at peak and a further 500 additional jobs indirectly Drigg Expansion of the Low Level Waste Repository at Drigg, the UK s national facility for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste - the project is expected to create around 120 full-time construction jobs. Energy from Waste (Sunrise Renewables) Development of a 10MW biomass power plant on the port involving a total investment of 25m - the project will create 50 jobs during the construction phase and 25 jobs once operational. West Cumbria Mining Development of a metallurgical coal mine to extract 1 billion tonnes of coking coal from under the Irish Sea in a total investment of 200m - the mine will create over 500 jobs when fully operational.

9 16 17 Supporting the UK energy sector Barrow is located at the heart of the UK s Energy Coast Supporting the booming offshore wind sector, hosting major companies such as Ørsted, Siemens and Vattenfall The port s Condensate Storage Facility is directly linked to some of the largest gas fields on the UK Continental Shelf The vision for Britain s Energy Coast anticipates 2 billion of investment and 16,000 new jobs in Cumbria

10 18 Supporting Kimberly Clark ABP s Port of Barrow is backed by the UK s leading ports operator Handling 150 billion worth of trade Around 60,000 tonnes of wood pulp per year are imported through the Port and transported to Kimberly Clark s Barrow Mill the largest tissue Mill in Europe and supporting over 400 jobs Contributing 6 billion to the UK economy and supporting 89,000 jobs Investing 1 billion to deliver world-class port infrastructure for customers
